714 days. That is how long Leo watched people walk past his cage.
Kittens were adopted in hours. Fluffy purebreds lasted maybe a weekend. But Leo had a missing eye from an old street injury and FIV, which scared away dozens of potential adopters who didn't understand the condition.
Every Saturday, the shelter staff told us he would sit right up against the bars, extending one hopeful paw to tap the shirts of visitors walking by. By Sunday night, he’d curl up in his litter box out of sheer defeat.
Last Friday, we signed the papers. When we opened the carrier in his new bedroom, he didn't hide under the bed like most frightened rescues. He walked straight over to our legs, rubbed his cheek against our ankles, and let out a soft sigh that sounded like two years of held breath.
You're home now, Leo. You never have to wait in a cage again.
Never look past the "imperfect" ones. They have the biggest hearts to give.
