This past Monday, Anaheim Public Library and Chance Theater partnered up for a special presentation of our Veterans Speak Up program. Three of our past participants -- Frank Barry, David Lopez, and Martin Ventress -- shared some of their stories and then engaged in a special discussion with those in attendance. We can never thank them enough for their service to this country, fighting for our rights and freedoms (and paying a price to do so).

And we wouldn't be able to help them share their stories if it wasn't for the support of some incredible sponsors -- California Arts Council, Roger Friedman, Katheryn Baker & Brad Feldman, Anaheim Community Foundation, Carol and Lee Oldham, Anaheim Hills Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club of Greater Anaheim, and the Employees Community Fund of Boeing.

Thank you to everyone involved in the seventh year of this important program!

Chance Members and Friends gathered on the Cripe Stage on December 12th to get a sneak peek into the creative process for the California premiere of "Ride the Cyclone." Season Producers Bette & Wylie Aitken kicked the evening off with a warm welcome to the beginning of Chance Theater’s 25th Anniversary Season. Then, director (and Chance’s Associate Artistic Director) Jocelyn A. Brown talked about her approach to this surreal musical adventure and showed some edited slides of costume inspirations, followed by co-Scenic Designer Antonio Beach showing an early ground plan of how the space will be transformed. Finally, we got to meet the cast (and we even got to watch a couple of exclusive performances).

WORLD PREMIERE - "Colonialism is Terrible, But Pho is Delicious"
by Dustin H. Chinn
Directed by Oanh Nguyễn

This biting comedy spans centuries, continents, and cultures in its three-part vignette structure. Beginning in 1880s Hanoi, the capital city of French Indochina, where a Vietnamese cook finds herself in the kitchen of aristocratic French settlers. Then in 1999, a century later, in Vietnam, where American diners get their first taste of the local cuisine. Then finally, in present-day, gentrifying Brooklyn, where the simmering argument around culture, ownership, and authenticity comes to a roaring boil.

Careful. You might never go home for the holidays again...

As the weather outside inches ever so closely to frightful, another anxiety-inducing thought makes its way into every Asian American’s mind… “Family Holiday Dinner” season. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like multiple questions from aunties about your singleness, grandparents commenting on your weight and, of course, home-cooked meals. No MSG Added brings you a new sketch comedy show for the holidays that is guaranteed to make you ten times more nervous about going home and sharing a meal with your family. Don’t worry friends, there is light at the end of December.

I saw Next To Normal on Broadway back in 2009 and loved it. This production at The Chance Theater, which I saw this past Sunday, was just as good; actually better because it's in a more intimate setting. The story, the music and direction was great. I couldn't tell you that any one of the actors stood out because they were all amazing; every single one of them. As I only moved to California last year, this was my first visit to The Chance. It certainly will not be my last.

SB805 is narrow and specific in its application & only affects grassroots nonprofit performing arts organizations. GuideStar defines grassroots arts organizations as those with revenues under 1 Million. These organizations are not well supported by public funding. California currently funds arts at only 66 cents per capita. Nonprofit performing arts organizations are charitable organizations engaged in 1st Amendment protected speech. They serve their communities by opening access to the arts to low income and BIPOC artists and patrons. If grassroots performing arts organizations are forced to close, lower income and underrepresented artists and communities will lose access to performing arts enjoyment, education, and artistic opportunities.
