Episode 2: Mail Call - Springfield Armory National Historic Site

Another envelope has arrived!

This time, a huge thank you goes to the incredible staff at Springfield Armory NHS Springfield Armory National Historic Site for sending back both the official National Park cancellation and the America 250 cancellation.

Established by George Washington in 1777, Springfield Armory became the nation’s first federal armory, manufacturing and storing weapons that helped shape American military history for nearly two centuries.

Watching this collection grow one envelope at a time has been so much fun.

America 250 Stamps
Episode 1: The First Arrival - Castillo de San Marcos & Fort Matanzas

The first one is back! Castillo de San Marcos NM Fort Matanzas NM

A huge thank you to the staff at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and Fort Matanzas National Monument for helping kick off my America 250 cancellation collection.

These two incredible sites preserve the best remaining evidence of Spain’s nearly 300-year presence in what is now the southeastern United States. Castillo de San Marcos, built between 1672 and 1695, is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States and was constructed to defend St. Augustine - the nation’s oldest continuously occupied European-established city. Fourteen miles to the south, Fort Matanzas was completed in 1742 to guard the “back door” water route into St. Augustine, creating a defensive network that protected the Spanish settlement for generations (National Park Service).

I’m sending requests to National Park sites across the East Coast, asking for both their official National Park cancellation and the special America 250 cancellation dated July 4, 2026. Seeing the first envelope return is incredibly exciting!

Thank you to all the National Park Service employees and volunteers who take the time to fulfill these requests. Your kindness helps preserve history and allows collectors like me to celebrate America’s stories in such a meaningful way.

To celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, I mailed letters to more than 40 National Park Service sites across the country, each with a request for their official America 250 cancellation stamp. Every envelope includes a self-addressed stamped envelope and a sticker for them to cancel and return.

America 250: Created by law in 2016 through the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission; led by a bipartisan group of lawmakers and private citizens; subject to congressional oversight and annual reporting

Some of these stamps will come from famous places I’ve visited, while others will represent sites that are still on my travel bucket list.

Together, they’ll become a unique keepsake of this historic anniversary and a reminder of the stories preserved across our national parks, battlefields, memorials, and historic sites. Which we should all be supporting because their funding keeps being cut.

Now comes the fun part…checking the mailbox and seeing which cancellations arrive first.

Here’s to celebrating 250 years of American history, one postmark at a time.
