🏄‍♂️ Did people surf in 1913? Absolutely.

More than a century ago, Matson Navigation Company invited travelers to Hawaiʻi aboard its luxury steamships. They came for Waikīkī’s sunshine, swaying palms, 🌺 fragrant plumeria, and legendary waves, discovering a surf culture that was revived by Hawaiian beach boys and Duke Kahanamoku.

Over 110 years later, the allure of Waikīkī remains timeless. ✨

The year is 1934. At the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Harry Owens and his orchestra fill the ballroom with music 🎶 while dancers glide through the Oni Oni ("to move, stir, or sway"), a graceful fusion of hula, rumba, and tango.

These photographs capture the spirit of a night you can almost step into. ✨

Created in the early 1930s for the Matson lines cruise ship from Los Angeles to Hawaii, Treichler’s striking Art Deco artwork captures the romance of ocean travel through vivid sunset skies 🌅, shadowed palms, and a gleaming liner crossing Pacific waters.

It’s more than a travel advertisement, it’s an invitation into another era, when the journey unfolded slowly and paradise waited just beyond the horizon. 🌺

Look closely 👀: Treichler left behind a hidden “T” tucked into the foliage. Can you spot it?

Aloha in full color 🌺

In the 1930s, artist Frank McIntosh created vibrant menu cover art for Matson Lines cruise ships sailing to Hawai‘i.

McIntosh’s bold colors, graceful figures, and Art Deco style give this piece an enduring appeal that feels fresh today.

Waikīkī in black and white, where the days felt endless and the ocean set the pace. 🌊🌺

From a guest room window at The Royal Hawaiian, Diamond Head rises quietly in the distance while palms 🌴 sway along the shoreline below. Sunlight dances across the water, beachgoers drift along the sand, and the afternoon unfolds slowly beneath the Hawaiian sky.

A timeless glimpse into Waikīkī in the 1950s. ✨

May Day is Lei Day in Hawaiʻi. 🌺

Today marks 98 years of a tradition woven in fragrance, feeling and aloha.

The sweet scent of plumeria drifts on gentle trade winds and when a lei is placed around your shoulders, you can’t help but smile—a quiet “ahhhhh.“ ✨

Ever seen a whole shoreline move as one? 🌊

In a Hūkīlau, people gather in rhythm: casting, pulling, sharing, woven together by tradition 🤝 and tide. What begins as work becomes celebration, carried on warm breezes and salt air.

That spirit comes to life in “Hawaii,” a 1960 Matson Lines menu cover by Louis Macouillard. Known for his vivid color and storytelling, Macouillard captures more than a place, he brings forward a feeling of community, movement, and aloha. 🌺

It’s a scene you can almost step into. ✨

A photo like this from the 1950s feels close enough to step into...if only for a second. ✨

You can almost feel it: warm sand, sun on your shoulders and that “just one more swim” kind of day. 🏖️

At The Royal Hawaiian and Outrigger Canoe Club, canoes lined up on the sand, umbrellas opened and surfers glided into gentle Waikiki waves. The shoreline moved at an easy pace where nothing felt rushed and everything felt right. 🌺

A moment worth keeping. See the 🔗 in bio!

More than a destination, Hawaii is a way of being. 🌺

A place where life is shared, where nature provides and where beauty shows up in everyday moments…like reaching up beneath the 🍃 leaves and finding something sweet.

“Nothing compares with life in Hawaii.” A feeling that stays with you. Always. 🌺
