It was so incredibly special to go from giving a talk about connecting the public with ctenophores through nightlighting and other outreach to taking about half the cTwo conference group out on the dock in Monterey to nightlight and look for wild ctenophores.

I took a lot fewer photos then I usually would because I was just soaking in being with everyone. Other folks in the group including Karla Agredano Madison McKay Kaiku Kaholoaa may have videos of the squid squads that kept zipping past the light and the baby seal that did a lap to look all of us in the face.

The last day of Ctenopalooza cTwo included a trip to Monterey Bay Aquarium. I can’t show you most of what I saw because we went deep behind the scenes, but one of the lovely folks in our group got this pic of me behind the Pleurobrachia* californensis tank and it makes me really happy.

There are a lot of reasons why I love iNaturalist but thus story highlights quite a few of them. I’m so glad to have a community to learn from and also a way to contribute towards our global understanding of marine life just by being curious and sharing what I see.

I saw so many of these ephemeral jellies in my research surveys this summer and they represent a really interesting evolutionary adaptation that I wanted to share with you.

The hydromedusae of genus Orthopyxis are only reported to live about 30 minutes. There other form in their alternating generations is a polyp which forms beautiful webs on algae and asexually buds more polyps or medusae. The polyps have the option of having tentacles for feeding, but the medusae have no tentacles and incredibly reduced anatomy. They serve one function: genetic diversification. When they are released they have half an hour to broadcast spawn their gametes with other Orthopyxis medusae and then they expire.

This gorgeous gorgeous worm is my favorite nightlighting find of the summer! It’s a polychaete worm likely in the genus Paraprionospio, which is part of the family Spionidae. Worms in family Spionidae typically form tubes from sediment and mucus, so it was cool to see this one swimming up in the water column. I love its colors and feathery face parts.

So excited to be attending Ctenopalooza cTwo next week as one of the artists and science communicators being supported by the conferences grant funding. I’ll be presenting on Increasing Public Engagement with Ctenophores through Art and Outreach in the Salish Sea and I’m excited to hear from the scientists there what they want YOU, the public, to know about ctenophores!

Summer technically has another month, but when the marine lab closes, it always feels like it’s already gotten away. When I was a kid, I’d always get this cold feeling in my chest in the summers; They weren’t a happy time for me. Summer has turned into my busiest time of the year, and the time I feel the most in community and like I make the most impact. It’s hard to say goodbye to it now, especially when it also means saying goodbye to so much of that community.

I finally invested in an OM SYSTEM Olympus TG-7 to take along on my tidepooling and dockfouling adventures, especially the ones that are a little too risky for comfort when using my full frame camera and probe lens.

I learned a lot on this first adventure, and while I’ve got some accessories and practice ahead of me to get the shots I want, I’m excited for where it will take me.
