Josephine White Eagle Cultural Center UMass, Amherst Updates on cultural events, collaborations, and above all...community! known for. Again, the space was limited.

The White Eagle Memorial Cultural Center was founded in 1989 and named after Dr. Josephine White Eagle, a member of the Ho-chunk Nation and a valued faculty member of the School of Education here at UMASS Amherst. Her commitment to Native Heritage, Language Preservation and Community Development is still an ongoing inspiration to the center's goals and achievements. Before her passing in July 1989

, Dr. White Eagle worked closely with the American Indian Student Association (AISA) as a mentor while continuing her linguistical research and program development for early education to preserve her Ho- chunk Language for future generations. Her Research is known as the White Eagle Lexicon and is currently being used by both the Ho-chunks of Wisconsin and the Ho-chunks of Nebraska. In addition, Dr. White Eagle continued to make her beautiful baskets, a skill she was widely known for. Originally the center was housed in a limited space in the Basement of Knowlton Residence Hall and relocated to its present location in Chadbourne House in 1991. In 1992 Native students advocated for expansion of the center to include a computer lab/ study hall, a library and an office space for a full time Program Coordinator. In fall of 1993 the center re-opened with its new features and a full time Coordinator. The center is a cultural and social support system for Native students, faculty, staff at UMASS, Native students at Amherst College, Smith College, Mount Holyoke College, Hampshire College and off campus non-student center members. It is also a cultural diversity awareness resource for the UMASS campus and the Pioneer Valley area. We assist with the organizing of the annual powwow, provide work study and non work study positions for students, contract Native Speakers, Artists, Musicians, Authors, Poets, and Craft Artists for on campus and in-house programs; assist Native students with life Skills Issues, advocate for Native Student's Educational and Human and legal rights, and act as a liaison to the Undergraduate Admissions Office, the CCEMBS Advising Center, Native communities of the northeast outreach efforts and the UMASS administration offices.

Today’s the last day of the MMIW Red Dress Display. We wanted to share the posters included in the display for those who weren’t able to come onto campus and see them.

We hope in the time it’s been out there, people in the campus community were able to stop and pay attention to something that impacts Indigenous communities in the U.S and Canada across generations.

We encourage everyone who read the posters to carry a sense of responsibility to be more aware of where people are coming from in their lives, the histories and voices they carry with them, as well as the actions they can take to stop cycles of violence and oppression, so that processes of healing and justice for those affected can begin.

Our MMIW Red Dress Display is on Goodell Lawn for everyone to come and see. The Red Dress is a symbol of the absence and loss of so many Indigenous women who have gone missing or have been murdered. It represents someone who should still be here - a presence that’s been stolen, but not forgotten.

May 5th is recognized annually as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Awareness Day. Read our display posters to learn more about the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirit People, and how you can help raise awareness and support families who are the most affected by this critical issue.

This is not a thing of the past - this is happening now, in communities across the world, and it cannot be forgotten or ignored. Take the time to learn, listen, and stand with Indigenous voices, so that no one else is forgotten or overlooked. Today - and every day - pay attention and do your part in pushing for justice and change.

JWECC is putting on another display of Red Dresses in recognition of Red Dress Day on May 5th and to raise awareness around the MMIW epidemic, affecting communities across the U.S. and Canada.

We’re also putting out a call for red dress donations to be contributed to the display. Anyone can donate a dress and if there’s more that you’d like to be said about where it comes from, if it has a story connected to it, we welcome the opportunity to have that story included in the display.

Please reach out to us through our email, [email protected] if you’d like to donate a dress and we’ll coordinate the best way for you to get it to us!
