On Mon 6/8 at 7pm, Jen Malkowski, Assoc. Prof. of Film and Media Studies at Smith College, presents “‘I Guess We'll Just Have to Evolve’: JURASSIC PARK at the Dawn of Digital Cinema,” followed directly by a screening of the 1993 blockbuster: https://amherstcinema.org/films-and-events/jurassic-park

When JURASSIC PARK premiered, it epitomized a film industry in transition, straddling the old ways of celluloid filmmaking and practical effects and the new ways of computer-generated images and other digital innovations. Spielberg's blockbuster film encapsulates that moment of cinematic evolution, as Malkowski will illuminate, by negotiating tensions of old and new on multiple levels: in its blending of practical and digital special effects, its story of ancient lifeforms resurrected by cutting-edge science, and its surprising thematic anxieties about technological progress.

Our annual free Juneteenth Community screening is supported in part by the Town of Amherst, and from a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
