The Fine Arts Center is deeply disappointed to announce the cancellation of our presentation of Alaa Shehada’s The Horse of Jenin. Mr. Shehada is unable to perform. We are working with artist management in hope of arranging a performance — either in person or virtual — at a later date. We look forward to having an opportunity to bring this powerful event to our patrons in the future.

🎉 Join us for a reception as we launch the first issue of our online journal, Afong’s Room: Dis/Orienting Asian and Asian American Performance.

Afong’s Room is a journal born from collaborations among faculty, administrators, artists and students. It calls on us to see the stage as a site for truth, memory, and collective liberation through reflecting on performance as a tool for resistance and social justice.
Inspired by the AAAACP’s 2024–2025 season, the first issue highlights artists whose works “dis/orients” the stage and use performance as resistance, honoring the long legacy of Asian and Asian American artists who has confronted systems of power through radical creativity.

📓 You can check out the journal at afongsroom.org!

🟨 The reception will be at the Bowker Auditorium Lobby, UMass Amherst, on Thursday November 6th, 6-7 PM

🥙 Refreshments will be provided. RSVP at the link in the bio! Please note, the reception is free to attend, and RSVP is not required for the reception.

🎭 Stay after for a solo theatre show, the Horse of Jenin, by Palestinian Theatre Artist, Alaa Shehada at 7:30 PM. Tickets for the show can be purchased online!

🫱🏻‍🫲🏾 Lead support of the journal is the UMass Fine Arts Center Asian and Asian American Arts and Cultures Program (AAAACP) in collaboration with other UMass Amherst programs, including the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department, Office for Equity and Inclusion, and Asian/Asian American Certificate Program, as well as the Five College Asian/Pacific/American Studies Certificate Program.
