“After a severe arm injury upended her life in the middle of the COVID-19 shutdown, Anita Hunt felt like she was trapped in a dark abyss. An artist since her youth, Hunt’s injury rendered her incapable of printmaking, her area of artistic expertise.

‘It was this huge identity crisis that I feel like I’m still going through,’ Hunt said. ‘It shifted everything into this unknown territory of, ‘Well, if I’m not making art, then who am I?’’

What happens when we slow down enough to see the stories hidden in nature?

In her body of work, Anita S. Hunt transforms wood carved by beetle larva (literal maps of the beetle’s lifecycles, which “in an uncanny twist… resemble the fantastic insects themselves,” Hunt says) into unexpected matrices for printmaking. The marks become maps, symbols, insects, and traces of lives that came before.

The works in the exhibition are a collaboration between the artist and the “ghosts of other life forms.”

On view at Hampden Gallery through December 15.

Hampden Gallery’s Hands On series returns this fall with a trio of workshops led by UMass alumna and local artist Eva Lin Fahey. Fahey’s work has been exhibited at Augusta Savage Gallery, and as a student her BFA thesis was presented at Hampden Gallery. Now, she returns to campus as a teaching artist, creating a full circle opportunity for students and community members to learn from an alumna. The series is supported by a Women for UMass grant.

Upcoming workshops
September 25: nature stamps and texture prints
October 23: bookmaking
November 13: watercolor shadow paintings
