Friday Arts Art you love. Stories that stay with you.

07/23/2026

A year ago, we launched Friday Arts to build the gallery we wished existed.

What happens when we slow down and look a little closer?

Closer to the artists.
Closer to the work.
Closer to the stories, ideas, and processes behind it.

We made films.
Visited studios.
Staged exhibitions.
Held conversations.
Published stories.
Made space for looking.

This year, 15 artists joined us.
11 exhibitions took shape.
8 films brought us into artists’ worlds.
And along the way, we began building a community of people who believe that living with art can change the way we see.

Now, as Friday Arts turns one, we’re preparing to open a permanent space outside New York City, while continuing our nomadic programming in New York and beyond.

A new chapter is coming.

Thank you for being here.

One year in.
We’re just getting started.

"I’ve always wanted to see before and after the present tense, the before and after of a place, and at the same time I know there’s nothing but this perpetual present process; my work reflects this contradiction."

—Halsey Rodman

Rodman's sculpture "The Wind at Night (B)" draws on his permanent installation at in Joshua Tree, California, where the desert’s apparent stillness disguises the continuous, natural and human-made microevolutions of the landscape.

Friday Arts's "Strawberry Moon" exhibition includes recent and new sculptures by Rodman alongside three other artists.

Strawberry Moon opens June 25 for four days only. Details at link in bio ⬆️

More than a decade ago, Molly Smith left the New York art world to homestead in the hills of western Massachusetts, where she built a life shaped by close attention to the surrounding landscape.

Her watercolor paintings gather fleeting moments of light, atmosphere, and season into luminous compositions suspended between stillness and change.

Molly Smith’s paintings begin with seasonal observation: winter light, moon phases, preludes to spring emerging through the trees.

Working in delicate washes of indigo, sepia, ochre, and violet, Smith compresses expansive natural moments into intimate works on paper that reward close looking.

In addition to his large-scale installations, Stephen Hendee harnesses light and form through sculptural works in reflective acrylic and metal. Inspired by digital culture and imagined futures, his practice considers the dark potential of technology-human interplay.

These works from his "Firmament" series bring together digital precision and material experimentation. Hendee constructs the work through a meticulous 3D modeling process, followed by laser-cutting cast acrylic and multiple stages of physical manipulation.

Balancing geometric structure with iridescent surfaces and glassy textures, Hendee’s sculptures hold a tension between entropy and permanence, exploring the implied promise of a virtual cultural memory.

Place is never neutral.

For these artists, it’s something charged, shifting, and shaped over time.

Across their work, place becomes a way of thinking—about deep time, movement, and the histories embedded in land.

Vernal brought together 11 artists exploring the natural world—not as backdrop, but as something lived, changing, and at risk.

Across these works, the natural world becomes a site of memory, attention, and material change.

These works hold space for both reverence and reckoning. They reflect how artists are thinking through this moment in real time, asking us to look more closely at what is already disappearing.

A selection of works is still available.

Rebecca Allan's paintings are informed by her practice as a horticulturalist, garden designer, and conservationist.

Allan’s paintings are sensitive to the specifics of place, always depicting locations she has personally visited, and at times conflating more than one such place. Depicted here is the Rhode Island specialty plant nursery , a treasured source for garden designers. The "cultivars" in the title describes a plant that has been bred or selected by humans for desirable characteristics. They are protected by a delicately rendered shade cloth. The upper left corner of the painting introduces Mount Baker from Washington State, behind a small burn pile that alludes to both managed and natural cycles of fire.
