My little hatchery helper loves looking through the microscope, but I need to have a chat with him about technique. His live feed counts have been a bit unreliable…

And I have to admit, while he is great company, grading the fingerlings takes a lot longer when he is helping 😅

Can’t wait for the first spawn of these Jade Perch. The broodstock are well conditioned and looking ready, just have to find a time to slot them in to our production schedule!

For those who haven’t heard of these fish, they hail from Australia and are a very promising aquaculture candidate; very tough, can be grown in density, and packed with Omega-3’s.

We have had many requests for fingerlings, and look forward to helping make this species available for the North American RAS and Aquaponics farmers.

I see a lot of hobbyists on the cichlid pages asking for help s*xing their fish. I was moving a few of the big male Jaguars(P. managuensis) today and thought it was a good opportunity to demonstrate what the male urogenital configuration on these looks like.

Granted, P. managuensis are easy to s*x by pattern when they are mature, but this technique works well for many species. Hopefully this will help a few people out!

After a couple years of hard work, lots of planning, regulatory hurdles and immense help, work and expertise from Dr. Ken Cain, Dr. Luke Oliver and others at the University of Idaho…we are excited to announce the stocking of our first cohort of Burbot (Lota lota) at our new grow out farm, “Hood River Aquaculture” in Hood River OR.

This is just the start, as the first and only commercial Burbot hatchery in North America we will be producing fingerlings at our facility in Washington, and growing these animals for market at our Hood River location. This is a wonderful fish that represents an incredible opportunity to provide the aquaculture industry with an excellent species for culture. We will be using our HRA facility to continue the process of domestication to continue improving factors such as growth rate, FCR and yield.

I brought my little hatchery manager along yesterday, he was very happy with the overall health and growth performance so far!

To most koi breeders, these mirror carp would be culls. I’ve been quite delighted to see an assortment of these beauties from a recent Karashigoi spawn. I’ll be holding back several dozen of the more ornately mirrored ones to watch their development.

Fun to see the more recent/basal carp ancestry in karash/chagoi spawns.

Burbot fingerings ready to go!

This cohort are currently averaging 1.5 grams and ready to grow. Ideal for diversification on a trout farm or cool water RAS/Aquaponics facility.

Message directly with any questions!

Excited for this spawn. Partially because the Marusei female Showa was the very first fish I selected in Japan a couple years ago, and partially because I can’t wait to see how the progeny develop.

After a failed spawning attempt with this female last year, I’ve been holding my breath and fearing egg impaction. For that reason, I selected four males to breed her with, in order to make sure all the eggs were expressed, as well as shoot for high fertilization rates. My fears seem to be unfounded as she has produced an incredible volume of large eggs, full of yolk. Should produce some large fry.

The males in the spawning are:

-Hasegawa bred Tomoin bloodline Kohaku (old and losing his Beni, but a great breeder)
-Two exceptional and very large Torazo Kohaku
- Koshiji White Tiger Shiro Utsuri

Now we wait in anticipation for hatching.

A little slo-mo feeding action of our yellow, blue, white and Kamloops trout.

Our koi broodstock are looking good. Looking forward to the upcoming spawning season!

Planned spawnings this year include karash, kabuto, shiro, ogon, kohaku and showa.

Busy summer ahead 😅
