The latest issue of The Illustrated Gallery newsletter is out now: “The Art of Drawing: Treasures in Black and White.”

In a gallery collection filled with vibrantly colored original magazine covers, it is easy for the drawings that filled the interior pages of magazines and books to be overlooked. Yet these works can be just as compelling, rewarding close attention to the line, technique, and skill of the artist.

For this special selection, we take a closer look at the strength of drawing within our collection, including recently identified publications for works by James Montgomery Flagg, Orson Byron Lowell, John Newton Howitt, and Frederic Gruger. The newsletter also features drawings by Joseph Clement Coll, Charles Dana Gibson, J.C. Leyendecker, Jessie Willcox Smith, Norman Rockwell, Rose O’Neill, Howard Chandler Christy, Arthur Rackham, Howard Pyle, and others.

Executed in pen and ink, pencil, and charcoal, these largely black-and-white works showcase a remarkable range of styles and approaches. Pictured in this post is Norman Rockwell’s “A Crock of Gold,” one of the many drawings highlighted in this latest selection.

Yet, drawings carry an equally powerful impact when given the proper attention. This selection encompass works executed in pen and ink, pencil, and charcoal. Largely done in black and white, they strip away the distraction of color, directing the viewer’s focus toward the line work.

This summer, we have been deep in the archives, researching our extensive collection, and we’re pleased to share a selection of newly identified illustrations in our latest newsletter, "August Research Discoveries."

A large-scale painting by Arthur Fuller, created for a 1920 Saturday Evening Post story centered on a con man, is featured among this week’s highlights. Also included are two advertisements by Benton Clark featuring the industrial innovations made possible by SKF Ball and Roller Bearings, along with two dynamic paintings by Arthur Sarnoff for The Moby Dick, an upscale seafood restaurant once housed in the historic Stardust Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and a group of romance book cover illustrations by Ted Sizemore.

Rounding out the newsletter are newly identified works by James Montgomery Flagg, William E. Hill, Gayle Porter Hoskins, and Frederick Coffay Yohn, among others.

New Acquisitions: Two Exceptional Post Covers by Norman Rockwell - https://mailchi.mp/illustratedgallery/exceptionalpostcoversbynormanrockwell We are thrilled to announce the acquisition of two new Post covers by Norman Rockwell, Hayseed Critic and Sailor and Girlfriend (The Voyager). From 1916 to 1963, Rockwell contributed 321 unique covers to The Saturday Evening Post, one of the country’s most popular and widely circulated publications. It is through his relationship with the Post that Rockwell earned his reputation as America’s preeminent illustrator.
