Route 66 through the eyes of our Drawing & Painting students!

Can you guess which iconic signs and landmarks inspired these paintings?

Hint: answers are at the end 😉

The 2,448-mile Mother Road, completed in 1926, links Chicago to Santa Monica, and every inch of the road is decorated with gas stations, advertisements, bars, and, of course, cars. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the Amarillo Museum of Art is hosting an opening for Ed Ruscha + Ron Cooper: Stations Words | Bars Cars on May 30 at 6:30 p.m.

“The idea for the show came together around thinking about the centennial of Route 66 and artists that have made travel and landscape part of their work, particularly the American West, where we’re located, but then going further west,” Alex Gregory, the curator of art at AMoA.

The exhibition brings together Ed Ruscha, a California-based artist, Guggenheim Fellowship winner, and a progenitor of the Pop Art movement, with Ron Cooper, a pioneer of the Southern California-based Light and Space art and founder of Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal.

“Amarillo has been a subject that Ed Ruscha has revisited several times throughout his career, and has been of a significant place in the history of art and contemporary art,” Gregory said.
