The August Wild Mare Post was mailed yesterday! Could the featured mare be one of these… or another Wild Mare waiting to be discovered?

Each month, a Wild Mare’s story arrives in the mail along with her original artwork and a few paper treasures—an invitation to slow down, learn more about these remarkable horses, and take a little digital detox.

If you’re curious about the Wild Mare Post and would like to discover the mares for yourself, you can join the herd by September 12th to receive the September mailing.

Moshi was the featured Wild Mare in June’s Wild Mare Post. Members received a blank 4 x 6 notecard featuring her painting, a sticker of the same painting, a few other paper treasures, and her story.

They had the chance to learn more about Moshi and the lives of Wild Horses through story and art—and take a little digital detox. I’ve heard from some members who enjoyed reading her story and looking at the art with their morning coffee or taking a quiet afternoon break.

If you have horses in your heart ❤️and would love to learn more about these amazing horses while enjoying art and the inspiration behind why I paint them, I’d love to welcome you to the Wild Mare Post.

I named this watercolor painting “Resilience” because this once-Wild Mare, Zaira, symbolizes resilience to me.❤️

Zaira was rounded up and captured as a 10-month-old filly from the Conant Creek, Wyoming Herd Management Area. The rope and her BLM tag left a permanent white scar around her neck—a mark that is still visible today.

Separated from her mother and family band, she was transported and lived in three different BLM holding and training facilities.

Until I adopted her in 2016.

She is resilient.

And she is also the sweetest mare.

Zaira taught me that I, too, am resilient.

During a five-year dark night in my life, when a health crisis left me with symptoms that mimicked a traumatic brain injury and perplexed many doctors, Zaira was my rock, my inspiration, and my reason to keep going another day.

With her huge loving heart she became instrumental on my healing journey and, ultimately, the reason I began the Wild Mare Series of watercolor paintings.

And now, through the Wild Mare Post, I get to share the art and stories of these amazing mares with others.

This is why I paint them.

Not just to bring their essence alive in a painting, but to tell their stories, honor what they have lived through, and hopefully help these Wild Mare reach more hearts.❤️

She and all she represents is why I began to create my Wild Mare Series watercolor paintings years ago.

She is also one of the many reasons why I started the Wild Mare Post--to share art and the untold stories of these beautiful Wild Mares and their families❤

She Can’t Run

Today, helicopters return to Colorado's Piceance Basin.

I photographed this heavily pregnant wild mare yesterday. Within hours, the roundup begins. She is one of the wild horses who may be driven for miles by helicopter as part of the plan to remove more than 900 horses from this herd.

Whatever your views on wild horse management, surely we can agree on one thing: mares this close to foaling deserve protection—not pursuit.

This morning, the July Wild Mare Post began its journey through the postal system, making its way to mailboxes across the country.🥰

I had so much fun putting together this month's mailing and writing the featured Wild Mare's story. It brought back so many memories, and I hope each envelope offers a little glimpse behind the scenes into her life and the inspiration behind the artwork.

Now I'm already wondering...

Meet Annabella of the Carracas Mesa Herd, one of the mares in my Wild Mare Series.❤️

A heartfelt thank you to Laurie for the beautiful photo reference and to Laura for suggesting I paint Annabella. I love how the horses bring together community so we can inspire each other.

Annabella will be featured in a future Wild Mare Post—my monthly snail mail filled with original artwork, the story of a featured Wild Mare, and keepsake treasures delivered right to your mailbox.💕

One of the reasons I created the Wild Mare Post was to share these mares' stories through art and help their spirit reach more hearts.

While not everyone has room for a 16" × 20" original painting, almost everyone likes to receive beautiful art in the mail. It's a fun and easy way to bring these amazing mares and their stories into everyday life.

I can't wait to share more of Annabella's journey with you in the coming months.

The beginning stages of 3 wild mares on the move. This part of my painting process is allowing the watercolor to flow and mingle together and create it's own beauty.

Allowing the horses and watercolor to guide me.

Letting go of trying to control the outcome and being patient🥰
Just like everyday living it's a practice❤

Meet Sakari from the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range in Grand Junction, CO.

I painted her in watercolor then varnished and mounted to a birch panel then sealed it with cold wax so it doesn’t need framing.

I love this style because the viewer can get up close and the beautiful textures show through without the glass being in the way.

Thank you Renee Edel for all you do for the Mustangs with Friends Of The Mustangs. Thank you for sharing the photograph and story about Sakari and for giving me the opportunity to paint her from your photo.❤💕❤
