8 months after the start of the civil war, escaped slaves were still being hunted and arrested in Philadelphia. The underground railroad won this round, though!

Public Ledger

"Camden Affairs - Attempt to Arrest a Fugitive Slave. - On Thursday night, Deputy U.S. Marshal Shiver, of this city, proceeded to Moorestown for the purpose of arresting a negro, named Perry Simmons, an alleged fugitive from slavery in Virginia. Upon arriving at the house occupied by the negro in question and gaining admission, they were prevented executing their writ, not only by the party whom they had designed arresting, who stationed himself at the top of a flight of steps, and, armed with an axe and a gun, threatened death to anyone who should venture to ascend, but by the assembling of a large number of negroes, who, during the night been summoned to the spot by the outcries of the alleged fugitives and those of his household. The officers returned to the city shortly after sunrise yesterday morning, without securing the fugitive, who is probably now en route for Canada, via the underground railroad. The whole affair was under the superintendence of Geo. F. Alberti, who formed one of the party."

Union soldiers have a snow day in Virginia... β„β˜ƒοΈ

They never put things like this in textbooks, and it's little moments like this that makes you remember that the soldiers in wars throughout history were actual people, many of them teenager boys or young men. It's funny to see that they reacted the same way people do now when it snows in a place it normally doesn't, by immediately having a snowball fight!

Sleighing In Virginia! Will the readers of the Herald believe that where cotton and figs grow, and where less than a month ago roses bloomed in the open air, the soldiers are now sn*******ng and the officers improvising sleighing parties? Such is the fact, however, and the prospects are good for a season of mud and slush worthy of New York itself, that will last for a month at least, and entirely prevent any active operations to or from this post. A dreary prospect indeed; but we have to make the best of it, and console ourselves with reading the accounts of our more fortunate brethren on the various expeditions, of which, wherever they be, we expect good tidings.

Tortoise found in 1877 inscribed with the date 1777, along with the words "Liberty" and 13 stars! While we do not condone carving anything into a turtle's shell, finding a turtle from the revolutionary war era is quite the discovery! πŸ’πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

A Venerable Inhabitant. The "oldest inhabitant,'' at least in this neighborhood, has just been discovered. A little daughter of Peter Riley tenant on the farm of A. H. Hagerman, Old Lycoming township, recently found a land tortoise on the farm of William Porter, deceased.

which bears evidence of great age. Its she'd bears a number of Inscriptions. On the back are carved the word "Liberty" and thirteen stars. On the face appear the initials D. M.

K. representing David M. Krisher, now of Muncy and the date July 18, 1S51. On the under shell the figures 1777 are carved, and a number of other figures and letters which arc now very legible now, apparently having been put on many years ago. Evidently this is an aged specimen of its class, and a curiosity such as is but seldom met with.

It is at present in the possession of a gentleman of this city, to whom it was presented by Constable A. Cassady.

A Philadelphia man believes lawyers are the cause of the civil war, and decides to do something about it!

The Philadelphia Inquirer
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Tue, Dec 17, 1861

"Down on the Lawyers - Late on Saturday night, a man, named John Rodney, who had taken a decided aversion to attorneys, and said they had brought our present national troubles upon us, amused himself by removing the small tin swinging suds of these professionals on Sixth street, between Chestnut and Walnut, and around in that vicinity. The police think this man should be named Caesar Rodney, not after the signer of the Declaration, but because, when arrested, he had under his arm some twenty-five signs, which he had seized. He was taken before Alderman Patchell, who committed him to answer the charge at Court."
