The drive from Alpine to Marfa doesn't take long, maybe 30 minutes if you don't stop, but it's the kind of stretch where you end up stopping anyway. 🚗 The highway cuts straight through high desert grassland with the Davis and Chinati mountains sitting on the horizon like they're keeping watch over the whole valley.
There's not much traffic and not much noise, just wind moving through the grass and the occasional pronghorn watching from a distance. Marfa itself has become known for its art scene and minimalist installations, but the road getting there is its own kind of art, all empty space and big sky doing more with less.
Sometimes the best part of a Texas landmark isn't the destination, it's the forty-five minutes of nothing that gets you ready for it. 🌵 What's your favorite stretch of empty highway in this state?
