School is back next week, which means backpacks, buses...and a lot more activity on our roads, neighborhoods, parks, and shared-use paths. Whether you're walking, driving, or riding, it's the perfect time for everyone to slow down, stay alert, and look out for one another.

Electric bikes and electric motorcycles have become incredibly popular, especially among younger riders. We want kids to enjoy the freedom that comes with riding a bike, but we also want to make sure they get where they're going safely. With more people the road, now is a great time for families to brush up on the rules, understand the differences between these vehicles, and make safety a priority.

Georgia Rules to Remember:

• Not every electric two-wheeled vehicle is a legal e-bike. Electric motorcycles and similar vehicles that don't meet Georgia's e-bike requirements cannot be operated on public roads, streets, or sidewalks.

• If you're riding a legally classified e-bike on the road, ride as far to the right as safely practicable.

• Riders must be at least 15 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike.

• High-powered electric vehicles that exceed Georgia's legal e-bike classifications may require registration, licensing, and compliance with motorcycle laws.

A quick family conversation today can help prevent a crash tomorrow. Understanding the law, wearing the right safety gear, and making smart choices every time you ride helps keep Alpharetta's streets, sidewalks, and trails safe for students, families, and everyone in our community.

I'm excited to co-host this town hall meeting with City Council Member and Police Department Liaison Kirk Driskell. In addition, Fire Chief Brad Denkinger and Police Deputy Chief Scott Mechler will be joining us to discuss and answer questions about public safety in Alpharetta. We look forward to hearing your comments and answering your questions about local issues that matter most to you.

North Point Entertainment District – Community Zoning Information Meeting

The City of Alpharetta will host a Community Zoning Information Meeting regarding the proposed North Point Sports & Entertainment District. During this public meeting, Jamestown LP will present the proposed mixed-use development and gather community feedback ahead of the formal public hearing process.

Alright, Alpharetta, as we head into Memorial Day weekend, a quick but important reminder for parents and riders about the safe and lawful operation of electric bikes and electric motorcycles throughout our community.

Electric motorcycles that do not meet Georgia roadway requirements are not legal for operation on public roads, streets, or sidewalks in Alpharetta. If a vehicle functions as a motorcycle, it is regulated as a motorcycle under state law, including licensing, registration, and equipment requirements. Many of the vehicles currently being operated locally do not meet these legal standards.

Law enforcement agencies across Georgia continue to report concerns involving unsafe operation of high-speed electric vehicles by young riders, including excessive speeds, failure to obey traffic laws, and dangerous riding behaviors that place riders and the public at risk.

Rules to remember in Georgia:
• Electric motorcycles and similar motorized vehicles are not permitted on sidewalks or roadways
• Riders operating legally classified e-bikes on roadways must ride as far to the right as safely practicable
• Class 3 e-bikes, capable of speeds up to 28 mph, require riders to be at least 15 years old
• Vehicles exceeding legal e-bike classifications may require registration, licensing, and additional safety compliance under Georgia law

The City’s concern is centered on safety. Many riders, particularly younger operators, may not fully understand the capabilities, legal classifications, or risks associated with these vehicles.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to carefully evaluate any electric vehicle before purchase to ensure it is lawful, appropriate, and safely operated within the community, helping keep Alpharetta’s streets safe, responsible, and welcoming for everyone.

Alright, Alpharetta—let’s clear this up before someone tries to take their golf cart to dinner on Haynes Bridge.

Can you drive a golf cart on public roads? The short answer is no.

Here’s how it works in Alpharetta:

What IS allowed (on roads 35 mph or less):
Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs) are street-legal and permitted on qualifying roads. These are 4-wheeled electric vehicles that travel 20–25 mph and come equipped with the safety features you’d expect—headlights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts, a windshield, and more. They’re registered, tagged, and held to the same rules as any other vehicle on the road.

What’s NOT allowed:
Golf carts and Personal Transportation Vehicles (PTVs) are not permitted on public roadways in Alpharetta. While PTVs may have some safety equipment, they’re limited in speed and not designed for road use. Golf carts? Even less so—no lights, no seat belts, and definitely not built for traffic.

So why the restriction? Our roads simply weren’t designed for them. Mixing low-speed, lightly equipped vehicles with regular traffic isn’t a great recipe for safety.

One more thing:
If it’s on the road, it needs to be properly registered. No exceptions.
