Back in bidness!
My family and I have landed on our feet after a rather excruciating year of living in a small apartment with no access to the outdoors, and I now feel very fortunate to be able to park my new outdoor workshop under the gracious shade of a Giant Redwood. Keep it tuned for a new online store & a revamped Etsy presence!

I've always maintained that you don't need a fancy axe to carve great spoons, and the hundreds of spoons I've carved over the past 6 years can attest to that.

However, if pressed, up until last weekend, I would be forced to admit that I'd never actually TRIED a fancy axe - so there was s small part of me that thought "maybe you don't know what you're missing!"

Well, at this past weekend, was kind enough to let me try out his carver - a fancy axe if there ever was one!

And folks, I'm here to tell ya - it was a damn fine axe and undoubtedly a pleasure to carve with.

However, when it came time to give Brian his axe back, I wasn't at all sad about it. My little $20 Collins camp hatchet defends itself quite admirably against such heavyweight competition. I mean, sure, if I had the choice, I'd take the Kalthoff - it is undeniably a thing of beauty. But at the end of the day, the $20 axe & the $250 axe both do the exact same thing.

Back from a splendid 3 days of spoon carving & camping ! It rained a whole bunch (3rd pic shows the dry squares left behind when & I pulled our tarps off the ground Sunday morning), but that didn't stop all of us from having a grand ol' time!

The rain was kind enough to knock off by the afternoon on both days, which enabled us to have a fabulous potluck & campfire on both nights (pic 2 shows holding court at the campfire on Saturday night, 2 pairs of glasses & all).

Pic 4 is a fresh-carved bouquet of some of the spoons I carved over the weekend; Pic 5 shows what can happen when you get a little TOO into the zone, and need to have someone else point out to you that you're bleeding. 🤣🤣

Special thanks to all the fine folks who came to my guitar pick-making workshop on Saturday, and the energy & enthusiasm they all brought! Someone even told me afterwards that the pick that they made in my workshop was their favorite thing they make all weekend! 😍

At last month's meeting, walked up to me with a bemused look on his face as I hacked away at a particularly obtuse piece of Purple Smoke bush, and said
"Whatcha makin' there? Some kinda...double spoon?"
"Naw, man", I replied. "I'm makin' a WALRUS."

The oy other walrus I've ever carved was out of glued-up pieces of walnut, which started out as a board, and were therefore quite flat. This gnarly piece of smokebush was QUITE the opposite, and the hardest part about making this piece is getting tge damn thing to sit flat! My kingdom for a belt sander! 🤣

And yeah, I'm gonna add tusks, at some point.

Spent a fun and productive afternoon carving at Unity Park. U was there from around 2-7pm. The weather was glorious, and in the last hour or so seemingly the whole neighborhood came out to kick a ball around.

Can't help but wonder if when Bruce sang about how "little Waely-Purly came by in her curly-wurly", he was talking about this spoon...🤫
OK, maybe not this EXACT spoon. This exact spoon did not exist on 1973 (nor, for that matter, did I).
But, y'know...a SIMILAR spoon.

Just a thought.

White Oak.
