Saturday night March 14, before "A TERRIBLE BEAUTY" at The Ice House,
writer JOANNE BROGAN will speak briefly about her book---
LETTERS FROM THE IRISH REPUBLICAN ARMY: AN AMERICAN LEARNS ABOUT THE TROUBLES
Ms Brogan's book is based on letters the author received from Political Prisoners and contemporary sources such as newspapers, television reports, scholarly books and doctoral theses.
Many historians agree that often the most advantageous way to tell a big story is to bring it down to how individuals are effected, letting them tell their own stories.
There are many similarities in the struggle for human rights in Northern Ireland and the United States.
This story will emphasis the humanity of residents of Northern Ireland and how their lives were changed by The Troubles.

OPENING NIGHT: "A Terrible Beauty" at The Ice House in Bethlehem
Through March 15

“A Terrible Beauty”, our fourth play in the Irish saga of the past century is not a true story, in the sense that its characters are not meant to portray anyone who actually lived in Belfast in 1922, But, it is a faithful story in that everything that happens in this play is meant to recreate the mood, place, and time of what are called the “Belfast Pogroms”--- daily and savage attacks by British Loyalists on innocent Catholic families in order either to “see every Catholic floating facedown in the bay” or to drive all of them out of the north of Ireland by any political, economic, or physical means possible.
But it is true that these things happened. It’s true that innocent people suffered immeasurably at the hands of their neighbors. And it’s true that these kinds of things are still happening. With public support. Here. Right now.
“MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and Pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.”
William Butler Yeats, “Easte,r 1916”
