FREE ART FRIDAY ALLEN PARK

Maybe sometime during the past 3 months you’ve been out and about in Allen Park running errands, dropping your kids off at school or ducking into a local restaurant for a quick bite to eat, when something unusual catches your eye. You stop and take a second look and discover a painting propped on the ledge of a local business, or a piece of jewelry clipped to a tree, or a photograph sitting on a park bench. “What’s going on?”, you wonder. Then you see the tag that says “Free Art Friday Allen Park”. And just like that, you’re part of an art movement!

What is Free Art Friday? Free Art Friday is a global art movement that brings free art to streets, parks, alleys, and eventually into the homes of those who find it. The Free Art Friday movement began in England in 2006 when a street artist known

as ‘My Dog Sighs’ began placing his art which was painted on crushed aluminum cans in public places with a tag that said ‘Free Art’. Other artists soon joined him and the movement spread. Over time, it evolved into an art scavenger hunt with photo clues posted on social media. There are currently Free Art Friday groups in 15 different countries around the world as well as 30 states in the US. And now, the Free Art Friday movement has arrived in Allen Park!

What is the purpose of Free Art Friday? Free Art Friday serves several purposes. It is a way for artists to share their creativity without pressure or expectations. It is a way to get their work into the hands of people who may not have seen it otherwise. It allows artists to connect with the community and bring beauty and joy into the world at the same time. Artists are encouraged to include contact information such as links to their website to help promote their work. Bringing people and art together can be challenging since many people don’t visit museums or galleries and develop an appreciation for original art. Free Art Friday Allen Park solves both of those issues by bringing art directly to the people at a price that can’t be beat! Free Art Friday is also a great way to bring attention and support to local businesses in the community.

People love free stuff. And people love social media. And—a distant third—people love art. Free Art Friday combines all three! The concept is simple: artists deposit works for free in public spaces on Fridays, then post photo clues to the Free Art Friday Allen Park page, encouraging people to seek out the hidden artwork and post a photo when they find it. Whoever finds the piece of art gets to keep it. And just like that, an art collector is born!

Who can participate?

Making art doesn’t need to be something only great artists, or trained artists, or professional artists do. Everyone is encouraged to create and hide art. It can be as simple as an origami bookmarks stuck between pages of a library book, hand- drawn postcards taped to a mailbox, a pair of beaded earrings, a collage, a photo, a hand stitched needle case... Really, anything goes - just so long as it is G-Rated and family friendly! The movement is open to all creative hearts and artists in the Downriver area; emerging and established, young and old, male and female - in other words - YOU!

How do I participate? Each week you can work solo or collaborate on a piece of art. Attach a Free Art Friday tag and leave it to be found outdoors in a public space in Allen Park. Once you ‘hide’ your art, snap a photo and post the clue on the Allen Park Free Art Friday page. Participating artists can tag their posts with #freeartfridayap

Finders use to photo clues to locate the artwork. When they find a piece, they are welcome to claim it as their own. It’s awesome when they post a photo or even just a message that it’s been found so that others won’t waste their time looking for it! The finder isn’t obligated to take the art if it isn’t something that suits their taste. Simply leave it for someone else to discover! We understand that hunting for art is fun and exciting, but in order for this event to be fun for more people, we do request that each finder only claim one piece of art each week.

How often do I have to participate to be a part of Free Art Friday? Whenever you want! There is no expectation to participate every week. Nobody will be keeping tabs on you. Participate when you want! But, keep in mind, the more the merrier!

What do I need to create for Free Art Friday? Whatever you want! Sing, dance, paint, sculpt, sew, knit, craft, build, write a poem… just create! There are no rules or expectations. This is just one way to spread joy to the world through art. You, too, can help brighten up the streets and lives around you!
