🎶 How We Make Concert Weather Decisions

We've had a few questions about how weather decisions are made for our Summer Concerts in the Park, so we wanted to share a little behind-the-scenes look!

Our staff monitors weather conditions throughout the day using forecasts, radar, Perry Weather—our real-time weather monitoring and lightning detection system—and guidance from a professional meteorologist who provides real-time updates via text throughout the day.

Our staff uses all of these tools, along with our meteorologist's expertise, to make informed decisions regarding event operations and public safety.

Whenever possible, we make weather decisions by 2:00 p.m. to allow time to coordinate with the band, vendors, and event partners. However, because weather can change quickly, we continue monitoring conditions throughout the event to ensure everyone's safety.

During a concert, Perry Weather detects actual lightning strikes within a 10-mile radius of Towne Park. If lightning is detected, a warning horn sounds and strobe lights begin flashing, signaling everyone to seek shelter immediately. Activities can only resume after an all-clear is given, with a minimum 30-minute wait from the last lightning strike.

Want to follow conditions yourself? Check out our Current Park & Facility Conditions page for live weather information, lightning status, and more:
