To tell the story of the Comedian Harmonists with integrity, the Harmonizers needed someone who understood it from the inside - not just as history, but as a German, and as a singer.

Norbert Hammes is a founding member of BinG! - Barbershop in Germany - and an award-winning director whose choruses and quartets have performed internationally. He has served as a key thought partner and subject matter expert for artistic director Joe Cerutti - one of primary voices Joe turned to as the Harmonizers developed their 2026 BHS International Convention set.

What drew Norbert to this story was a book - Eberhard Fechnerโ€™s ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ด: ๐˜š๐˜ช๐˜น ๐˜‰๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ด - a gift from his wife that he finished in a single day. โ€œThe moment it really got me was when I got this book,โ€ he says. โ€œThe book changed everything. Because until then, I didnโ€™t know their history. I just knew the music.โ€

In this weekโ€™s interview, Norbert discusses what the Comedian Harmonists mean to him as a German, the specific questions Joe brought to him about authenticity and cultural accuracy, and what he thinks of what the Harmonizers have built. โ€œThe song selection from the Harmonizers is just perfect,โ€ he says. โ€œHistory and a deeply touching story. Hope, vision, and entertainment.โ€

Last weekend, the Alexandria A Ca****la Collective - home to both the Harmonizers and Metro Voices - gathered in Alexandria for a pre-contest retreat. Over three days, more than 100 singers, coaches, and supporters worked, listened, laughed, and sang in preparation for the BHS International Convention in St. Louis on July 3rd.

Coaches Darin Drown and David McEachern - both well known in the barbershop community - worked with the Harmonizers on our contest set, fine-tuning not only vocal technique and conveying the message of the music but also the acrobatic antics the Comedian Harmonists were known for.

On Saturday evening, the Harmonizers performed their full set in full costume for Metro Voices - and Metro Voices performed their set in return for the Harmonizers. Dinner, our annual awards ceremony, and an afterglow followed โ€“ and then Sunday morning it was back to work!

It was a great weekend of hard work, focus, and connection that left us even more excited to take the stage in St. Louis. We hope we will see you there!

Thanks again to our wonderful coaches for sharing their time and expertise with us.

This Sunday, a brief interlude to share some of the music The Harmonizers have been living with for the past few months. "Harmony" is the up-tempo title song from the Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman musical that brought the Comedian Harmonists' story to Broadway. Songs from this musical, arranged by Steve Armstrong, are at the heart of what The Harmonizers are bringing to St. Louis on July 3rd.

Most barbershoppers have never heard of the Comedian Harmonists. David Wright thinks that should change.

Randall Eliason sat down with David to talk about who the Comedian Harmonists were and where they fit in the history of close harmony. David has spent more than fifty years in the Barbershop Harmony Society as an arranger, judge, and administrator. Heโ€™s the Associate Director of the Ambassadors of Harmony and an expert on the history of barbershop. If anyone can put this story in context, itโ€™s him.

Hereโ€™s what heโ€™ll tell you: The Comedian Harmonists were doing what we do. Harmonically, they were operating in the same world as barbershoppers. Same tuning system, same instinct toward locking and ringing chords. They took the American close harmony sound, brought it to Europe, and turned it into something theatrically spectacular. They performed for royalty. They sold millions of records. They were one of the most celebrated vocal ensembles on the planet.

And then they were silenced.

Particularly for those who love this art form, their story matters and deserves to be told.

Cy Wood is a third-generation barbershopper who grew up singing the music. His musical career then took him to Broadway, Disney, and national tours. Now he works at a theater in Palm Springs and serves as a performance judge for the Barbershop Harmony Society. Heโ€™s been choreographing for The Harmonizers since 2015.

In this conversation, Cy talks about what itโ€™s like to bring a set this ambitious to a barbershop stage. He discusses how you start with a big vision and work down to the details; how you give a group the choreography and then step back and let them own it.

He also talks about what this set means beyond the contest. The Comedian Harmonists were a singing and dancing troupe. Their story deserves to be told with movement, not just harmony. And Cy believes the Harmonizers are ready to tell it.

โ€œItโ€™s something we as barbershoppers should definitely know about and we should honor and support.โ€

You may have noticed weโ€™re mixing things up a little.

Next week, the focus turns to the chorus and what it takes to get ready for an International contest. Steve Armstrong returns to walk us through the arrangement of the second song. Patrick Horne joins the conversation with his thoughts on portraying the N**i officer for the set. The chorus refines the staging, the choreography, and the final performance details in the weeks leading up to St. Louis.

Before we leave for the convention, weโ€™ll perform for our community. If you can, join us Tuesday, June 23 at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Road, Alexandria, for the traditional pre-contest send-off featuring performances of our contest sets by both the Harmonizers and Metro Voices. Family, friends, and patrons are welcome. Stay tuned for details.

And the story of the Comedian Harmonists does not end in St. Louis. The Harmonizers are learning actual songs from the original Comedian Harmonists repertoire, and intend to bring that music, plus a reprise of our convention set, to the AACCโ€™s Fall Show. More to come!

See you next week.

Honoring Our Heroes: This Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

As we observe Memorial Day, the Alexandria A Ca****la Collective (AACC) honors and remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Supporting our veterans and military families is a core part of our mission. This month, we were privileged to put that mission into action through the power of music:

โœจ Honor Flight Network (May 16 & May 30) On May 16th, we gathered at National Airport to welcome veterans to Washington, D.C. with patriotic music and heartfelt smiles, as they arrive for a tour of the nationโ€™s monuments. We look forward to greeting the next incoming flights this coming Saturday, May 30th!

โœจ TAPS Annual Banquet (May 23) On May 23rd, AACC had the profound honor of performing for nearly 1,000 attendees at the annual banquet for TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors), supporting those grieving the loss of a military loved one.

๐Ÿ“ธ About the Photo: The background featured in our carousel is a meaningful piece of our historyโ€”a photograph of the military cemetery in Normandy, France, taken by our chorus members following our performance at the D-Day 70th Anniversary in 2014.

Today and every day, we stand in gratitude with our military community and their families.

This documentary, filmed in 1975 and 1976 by filmmaker Eberhard Fechner, features the surviving members of the Comedian Harmonists speaking in their own words about their lives and the story of the group. Although it is in German with no subtitles, we are sharing it for the historical context and because the testimony inside it is remarkable.

Among the accounts in the film is the story of the group's final concert in Germany. Before the performance, a N**i official stepped on stage and announced to the packed house that this was the Comedian Harmonists' last permitted appearance, their music no longer acceptable under National Socialist ideology. Then he stepped off. The group walked on.

One surviving member described what followed as an ovation of extraordinary or immense intensity. People rushed to the front of the stage before the group had sung a single note. At the end of the concert, the crowd shouted "Auf Wiedersehen." The group sang farewell.

The Harmonizers bring this story to St. Louis on July 3rd.
