Art by Eileen

Art by Eileen Artwork including mosaic, watercolor, acrylic and collage pieces. Commissions accepted! Like a lot of people, I loved creating art as a child.

But as I grew older, I veered into scientific and research topics rather than art. It might have been a midlife crisis that brought me back to art, but I started taking art classes about 12 years ago. I am now creating all kinds of art, including mosaics, watercolor and acrylic paintings, and collages. I find that like many fellow artists, I am the "ultimate recycler," finding ways to reuse materi

als and even themes. For example, some of my collage pieces use a watercolor painting as a base or background, with patterns and layers created by adding hand-painted papers or other found objects. Similarly, when I create mosaic piece, I often use discarded plates, glassware or tiles, as well as glass scraps from my friends who are stained glass artists. When I find an image or theme I truly like, I also get a kick out of reinterpreting it in a different media. Look for my work at the wonderful Del Ray Artisans gallery, at 2704 Mt. Vernon Ave, in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, VA and at the fabulous Palette 22 restaurant (4053 Campbell Ave) in the Shirlington section of Arlington!

Wayback Wednesday to 2019. Titled Palms, this simple piece was featured in the Wanderlust show during the pandemic, when most of us were just dreaming of places we'd like to go! It always made me feel calmer just looking at it, so maybe I need to revisit palm trees (artistically and in person!).

Wayback Wednesday to 2010! This fun piece, titled The Rising, evolved from a photograph of spiral stairs at a lighthouse in the Outer Banks. It sold during a Gallery Without Walls show at VCA Alexandria, run by . I always loved when art sold there, because who thinks they'll end up buying art when they go to have their pet treated?

Another unboxing post, well, I forgot to show the box unopened, but here it is. I had a lovely surprise waiting for me the other day from the most generous, kind and talented Joyce Wagner of She sent me a bunch of goodies from Mosaic Tile Mania, and I can't wait to start using all these amazing tiles and pre-cut glasses! Thanks so much Joyce!😍

So a week ago, I had the chance to visit the Glass House in Decatur and whenever I go to a new glass store, I'm like a kid in a candy store! So when they told me they had a mystery mosaic box, I was like sure! Had so much fun unpacking and sorting the cool glass pieces they had saved for a lucky mosaic artist like me! Stay tuned to see what I create with all of this!

The last day of the challenge, Day 28, is about JOY! Well, for me, most of the time I'm gel printing there is joy (although sometimes frustration or disappointment that the print didn't turn out the way I envisioned!). Here I was trying to emulate bubbles, cuz don't they always symbolize joy?

Day 27 -- self-portrait. Now I'm not a great portrait artist like my buddy but here is my attempt, created by using Posca markers on the plate and then picking up with a solid color.

Day 26 -- Gift! The theme for the day is to show a print (or two) that you are going to gift someone! Could that someone be you? Let me know if you're interested -- if shipping costs aren't too bad, I won't even charge you for that!
