The Charles Houston Advisory Council is hosting a fundraiser and silent auction to benefit the Charles Houston Recreation Center on Saturday, December 10th 6PM-8PM. Donations are 100% tax deductible.

TODAY at the Recreation Center hosted by ! We are so excited to have come back to Alexandria after having the honor to compete at the 2020 ❤️ Doors open at 6–be sure to wear a mask and witness the excellence of our very own Olympian ❤️

Our poetry slam is today at 5! We’re so excited to hear all of our youth poets and to see everyone there ❤️ Also looking forward to hearing our musicians today; we’re sure everyone’s going to be incredible 😄

One of our poetry workshops with the 8-11 year olds at the rec, taught by fellow youth poet .marie and Advisory Council president .shen! They learned all about haiku, hokku, and free verse. We analyzed poetic form using rap music, traditional, and contemporary poems. Then, they had the chance to write and present their own work! All incredibly talented young writers.

Interested in poetry? Come to our poetry slam TOMORROW, July 24, from 5-7 to hear some incredible youth poets, live music, and enjoy some family fun. This free event is sponsored by the Advisory Council.

The In This Skin poetry slam will be on July 24, 2021, from 5-7 PM, at the Charles Houston Recreation Center. We encourage everyone to show up and listen to youth poetry, enjoy live music, and have some food while there! The event is free to attend.

Calling all Alexandria Youth Poets!

The “In This Skin” Poetry Slam sponsored by the Charles Houston Recreation Center Advisory Council is a free event for Alexandria youth (grades 6-12) to tell your stories, narratives, and experiences, with your poetry!

It will take place on Saturday, July 24, at 5 PM, in the teen center of the Charles Houston Recreation Center.

SIGN UP to read your poetry at the slam before July 11 to have a spot in our line up of youth poets! The link for sign-up is bit.ly/itspoetslam and is also included in our bio!

Interested in volunteer hours, community involvement, activism or the arts? Then this is the perfect opportunity for you! We are looking for youth voices (grades 8-12) in planning our summer poetry slam! This will involve discussing planning the event, marketing, and much more! You do not have to perform at the event to be apart of the subcommittee and vice versa, although you may always do one or both!
