Printmakers Inc at the Torpedo Factory

Printmakers Inc at the Torpedo Factory Printmakers Inc is a collective studio of fine art printmakers and book artists in Alexandria, VA. Currently, Printmakers Inc. and Havre de Grace in Maryland.

Printmakers Inc., opened in June 1975 at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center in Alexandria, VA, with the intent to create and promote original hand-pulled prints. Thirty-nine years later we still make original hand-pulled prints in our workshop, and show them in changing exhibitions in our gallery. We participate in outreach to the public through special events, demonstrations and explanations about p

rintmaking techniques. The membership consists of ten dedicated and skilled printmakers, working in a variety of media. Several artists work with relief techniques (woodcuts, linocuts), others do monoprints, lithography, intaglio (etching, etc.), and silkscreens. Some work in more than one medium, and many combine different techniques, experimenting with new ideas. We learn from each other and support our fellow printmakers' efforts. The style of our work ranges from representational to abstract, black and white to color. is working with a New England printmaking group to create a portfolio of prints. Among different venues, the co-op has recently exhibited as a group in Williamsburg, VA. Studio 325 is open every day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. You are invited to visit our studio to see our work and ask questions.

Stop by the studio May 1-13 for “Avis Fleming: Encore,” a special show for Avis’s retirement. You’ll see a gorgeous array of her work, including landscapes, animals, and figures, done in etchings, lithographs, mono prints, and more.
About Avis’s work: “The basis of most of my painting, drawing, and printmaking is gestural washes followed by defining lines. The “washes” might be watercolor or black ink washes and etching inks. I learned from my mentor, English etcher and watercolorist Anthony Gross, that whether one is drawing an animal, a person, or a tree, it works best to feel the shape and movement of the subject before you even begin.”
