Two years ago today I took that awful fall that pretty much changed my life. I had hoped my accident would be a short decorating detour but unfortunately, as it turned out, it was much more. I suspect that the word around town has been that I no longer do a display or I have moved or worse died but to the contrary I'm still here, and although it's not that easy to get around it hasn't kept me from dreaming up new ideas, fabricating and lighting new projects and planning for a season when Collingwood Lights will return.
I can't think of a more rewarding hobby than this. I don't know how to put into words the joy and satisfaction felt that first night when the lights are finally turned on after all those many hours of work. What I do know is that that feeling will be felt again if only for a single season, it will be felt again, but just not this season.

A year ago today while working on my ladder doing some of the high work in my display my wife warned me " that ladder will be the death of you". A day later, lying face down in the yard, it nearly was. In the months that followed she did everything for me, and I mean everything, as I struggled to get back on my feet. Without her I don't know what I would have done and I will never be able to thank her enough. Shortly after my surgeries the doctor was examining my leg and I was eager to know when I would be fully recovered there was decorating to be done in 2021 after all. His response was "You have suffered a life changing injury". At the time it really didn't sink in, life changing? come on. Here I am a year later trying to manage pain, struggling to walk at times even with the help of a cane and doing everything I can to avoid another surgery. Needless to say I now fully understand what he meant.
I'm sorry to say there will be no display this year as much as I wanted it to be so and as for 2022 I can only hope.

God bless and Merry Christmas,
Bill Vaughan

Three months ago today I was reminded of just how mortal I am. Now if I can just shed this walker and be able to walk unencumbered in the coming months I'll feel blessed.

Thank You!
It’s been nearly seven weeks since I was injured while setting up my display and I am finally able to move around the house with at least some degree of confidence with a walker. I’m so grateful to be able to be up on my feet and though I have a long way to go I am finally able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. If all goes well I will be walking again without assistance in two to three more weeks. This has been a Christmas, and a year for that matter, like no other but it has shown me how truly blessed I am to be part of such a caring community, one that would reach out in so many ways to lift my spirits and ease my worries after my accident. I want to thank everyone for their offers of help with my display, meals, their many cards, letters, posts to my page and their way too generous contributions to Collingwood Lights. I want to thank Patricia Rollins, who organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to help in the costs associated with my display and also thank the many, many folks that contributed; your generosity was truly overwhelming. The money raised will not only cover this year’s displays expenses as well as its partial set up and tear down but go a long way toward a display next year, and God willing, Collingwood Lights will shine again in 2021.
Again, Thank you and God bless you all!

November 20, 2020
I so wanted to do my display this year to maybe raise a few spirits. I started planning and beginning work in July while recovering from my latest bout of pneumonia and then beginning set up in September. By November 1st I was actually ahead of schedule and some of my worry and doubt that it would be too much for me this year was beginning to subside. On the 4th of November I was standing at the top of a 16’ ladder when one of its legs suddenly sunk in the ground and I came down. In that single moment all that has been invested and any hope for a 2020 display vanished. The impact drove my ankle up into my lower leg and I ended up face down in the creek that runs through my front yard. I thank God my wife was teleworking from home and I’m still alive. After two leg surgeries and an exploratory abdominal surgery I’m finally back home. I won’t be able to put any weight on my left leg for eight weeks but my hope is once I am ambulatory I can hire and supervise folks in taking down what I have already put up. It is so disheartening looking out over the yard knowing it will remain dark and I know a lot people have driven by and have kept track of my progress in anticipation of the light up. Please help me pass the word that although there are decorations up this year, sadly, we will be dark.
