In celebration of your 80th birthday anniversary, I join all the other students and family to rejoice, dear Prof! I am especially grateful to you for teaching me the importance of making connections between the Fine and Applied Arts, and life in general; for sharing about the evocative nature of the Line and the layering of stories; for encouraging us to stand for what is right no matter the consequences; for gathering a community that became family; for providing the space for sharing and pulling everyone along… for being you! It is a privilege to be called your student. Thank you.

Ogene Ọma festival, Oguta.
The energy of my work comes from growing up in this place. Being part of a community with many festivals to celebrate throughout the year, where the crowds and their excitement are an integral part of the experience, is an endearing way to live.
I translate all this energy in my canvases. There is no conventional sense of perspective. Things overlap, move into, disappear, resurface elsewhere. Welcome to Oguta, isolated and away from highway, nestling by the Great Lake.
I took so many pictures of this event, sometimes on my knees (till they hurt) till my shoulders felt pained. I occasionally raise my hands to rest and to stretch between shots. Yet there is a pounding urgency- I may miss THE SHOT.
I am looking at all these images from the festival, and thinking of ways to convey these experiences, while staying fateful to the culture. I have some 30 years of color work, of twisting and combining colors. It starts as a still image, then as a painting, and so much more. I will get to the painting. I have clues as to what more ought to happen next.

New media. Workspace. Creative process. There are all these bits and pieces that can be scaled to great monumental sets (I hesitate to call them sculpture) When the elements of sound, light, movement, color are used in any space, there is an activation affecting more human senses than we use in perceiving conventional sculpture. Kolanut liquid is that orange juice In the bowl. I am still fascinated by the work of - tiny dynamic summaries! That wooden disc with a gold streak and trees… the act of making is gradual. For the artist, the flow never shuts down. There are just moments when the work has new interpretations. possibilities. .

GO. Inspiration. Reimagining one’s dreaming happens in uncomfortable situations. The solution comes from an unfamiliar environment, when one has exhausted all known possibilities. Memory is unlocked, and the child steps out bathed in glowing green. A multidimensional world is within grasp, beyond Color, lines and space. Full of energy, sound and a lively world tingling through seasons. Is it a sculptor revealed/unchained? I am here.

Since returning to Africa, my camera has been a treasure for seeing, for character portraits. I came back with new insights on everything, musing like the magi in T.S. Elliot’s poem The Journey of the Magi. Mine has been a journey to find, to affirm, to refine all those ideas about masterpieces, only to discover that I had lived so long with kings and queens without paying homage! Now I am here, to salute you all- friends, family, muses, all who show up. I am witness that I have lived in great times, and seen so much joy and laughter, dignity and strength of character in my people.

Since leaving, I have been taking stock of all these paintings made while at the Torpedo Factory Art Center- some of my paintings were left behind in America, but I packed 3 cars with so much Art! Don’t know if I will start putting them back in stretchers for photography. I still study, I am looking at old wood that has lived in human spaces. I am thinking of the materials that those tradition al Uli artists used, appropriating them. Maybe an exhibition will happen, or there will be more sales. I am glad to have come out with my camera. I should document stuff- there is so much I am seeing with a changed mindset. I embrace the simple village life. ,

Since October, I have been living an ordinary life. And that is not newsworthy. But I am at peace, here in Africa. I can look at all the bu****it around and switch off the noise. All the materials are coming together for creating new pieces- the new works may bend regular categorizations. I am still exploring, seeing anew, gathering… all for the series land/son.
