🌟 Sensory Village Story Time! 🌟

We want to hear from you! Share a brief story, favorite moment, or positive experience you’ve had at The Sensory Village—post it on social media, email us, or tell us in person. Every entry will be entered into a drawing to win FREE Sensory Village swag!

This month, I’d love to share my favorite story: Recently, a child who had never physically touched a dog before was able to pet one of our therapy dogs for the very first time, after a few gentle visits. Moments like these are what make our community so special!

We can’t wait to celebrate your memories with our village. 🌈

☀️ Happy First Day of Summer! ☀️

We asked AI to help us celebrate, and things got extra silly around here…

Today you’ll find Melissa and Tessa floating in the water table in colorful inner tubes, wiggling around as worms in the wiggle bits, scuttling around as crabs in the sand, camping out as a bear and a deer in our sensory campground, and lounging as cats and dogs in the rice house!

No matter how you spend your first day of summer, we hope it’s filled with sunshine, laughter, and a little bit of imagination. Here’s to a season of sensory play and fun adventures for everyone! 🌈🦀🐻🐱🐶🦌🪱

🏀 OWNER SPOTLIGHT 🏀

Did you know both Tessa and Melissa have a passion for basketball as well as child development and sensory play? We both played high school basketball (with Melissa taking her game to the college level!) and now we get to coach our own kids’ teams. Whether we’re hitting the hardwoods or creating new sensory experiences, we love helping children grow, learn, and have fun—on and off the court!

✨ Not All Sensory Input is Created Equal ✨

Have you ever noticed that one child calms down by jumping, while another seeks out a cozy blanket or covers their ears?

That's because sensory regulation isn't one-size-fits-all. Different sensory systems provide different types of input, and understanding them can help us better support our children.

🔹 Proprioceptive Input (Body Awareness) Helps children understand where their body is in space and often has a calming, organizing effect. Examples: • Pushing or pulling heavy objects • Carrying groceries or laundry • Climbing • Animal walks • Squeezing playdough

🔹 Vestibular Input (Movement & Balance) Provides information about movement and position of the head. Examples: • Swinging • Spinning • Jumping • Rocking • Rolling down hills

🔹 Tactile Input (Touch) Helps children process information through their skin and hands. Examples: • Sensory bins • Water play • Finger painting • Playing with sand, slime, or shaving cream • Exploring different textures

🔹 Auditory Input (Sound) How we process and respond to sounds in our environment. Examples: • Listening to music • White noise • Nature sounds • Singing • Noise-canceling headphones for overwhelming environments

🔹 Visual Input (What We See) How our brains interpret visual information around us. Examples: • Watching bubbles • Lava lamps or sensory lights • Visual schedules • Looking at books or pictures • Calm, uncluttered spaces

💡 The key takeaway: A child's preferred sensory tool is often sensory-system specific. What feels calming and regulating for one child may not work for another.
When we understand the type of input a child is seeking, we can better meet their needs and support regulation in a meaningful way.
