All levels – beginners welcomed and encouraged!

We'll cover a step by step approach to “alla prima” oil painting (alla prima = all in one sitting) that is simple enough for beginners but also relevant to more seasoned painters. Classes are tailored to the individual needs of each student, including personalized feedback and plenty of time for questions.

My regular rate for teaching is $24/class or $90/4 class series. I'm offering this class – and the 4 class series if we decide to continue – for a pay what you can donation. If you are unable to pay, you are still welcome to join the class.

Because the class is limited to only 8 students, please sign up only if you are able to attend.

I'm really thrilled to have this opportunity to paint with you virtually. In times of stress and uncertainty, a creative practice can be a place of solace. I'm looking forward to sharing my skills and experience with you and discovering what we can create together!

Hello, Artbox supporters!
We hope that you all are doing well during this challenging time. We have been thinking about each one of you and how we can bring our community together right now. With that in mind, we thought it would be great to curate an “on-line” display through Facebook and Instagram. Please post any art you have been working on during this time. Your works could be anything at all; a performance, a song, a painting, a video, a photograph, etc. The goal is to connect and inspire. Please share any digital images of your works at https://www.facebook.com/ArtboxAbq/ or post your photos to Instagram and tag and use .

Also, with this time, please consider making something for our third Artbox installation that will be curated after we are no longer required to social distance. This exhibit will be called “Apart Together.” It will explore our experience of our common cause of social distancing as well as our individual and collective experiences of this unprecedented time in human history. Artists are invited to express how they are affected by the epidemic, thoughts or ideas about current events related to COVID-19, or even just to use this project as an activity to pass the time, find some peace or inspiration, or provide kids with an activity and an opportunity to see their art on display later on. Subject matter can, but does not need to directly reflect COVID-19 or the epidemic. You might choose to create something with your children or family, write or draw a message of hope, or paint a wonderful still life of your shoes. It’s all about using this time to create and enjoy the wonderful healing, engaging, and expressive properties of art!
For more details about the size requirements and other aspects of the physical installation, feel free to send us a message or email us at [email protected]

To our Albuquerque community and global community of humans: we would like to extend our sincerest wishes for your health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic(and always!). While each and every one of us is experiencing this time in our own unique way, facing our own challenges, and managing our own internal and external worlds and physical and emotional health, let us remember that we are all in this together. While we may be socially distancing ourselves, it doesn't mean that we can't remain connected to one another in our thoughts, on our computers, and through our art!
We will be sharing some creative resources and activities for people of all ages that can be done at home. We would also like to encourage you to post things you've created (drawings, culinary creations, educational projects...) to share or ideas for our community.
We will remain connected, but look forward to seeing you all again on the other side

“Aluminum alloy tubes all tuned to play as one, using the pentatonic scale, the same scale used in West African music, gospel hymns and New Orleans Jazz”

“Let the wind bring you a melody, a smile, and a sense of peace with nature.”

In this piece, artist and Artbox Abq co-founder, Leilani Brothers, brings a recording of a sound sculpture by Jim Hart from its location in New Orleans, Louisiana to our ears in Albuquerque.

“See Me”
By: D. R. Shaw
Ink on paper
On display in Artbox: Tree Being at Maple Street Dance Space.

Dagmar R. Shaw was born in Hamburg, Germany. She immigrated to America as a child with her family and later became a naturalized citizen. She lived in Mississippi, New York, Oklahoma and Texas, and has always enjoyed the different local flavors and cultural attributes of each state. For most of the last 50 years Dagmar and her husband have made Albuquerque, New Mexico their home, always enjoying the cultural diversity, the wonderful climate and the ever-changing landscape and sky.
Dagmar likes to work with acrylic and water color as well as colored ink and pastel. She draws on her background to focus on dance costuming and movement, particularly ballet, while the physical environment of the southwest, the skies and mountains and ancient desert topography, continue to inspire her landscape works. Over the years she has attended numerous art classes, but is primarily self-taught.
She has exhibited at Albuquerque's Gallery ABQ, Hoffmantown, and currently has a number of works exhibited at Maple Street Dance Space in Nob Hill.

"See Me" has been generously donated by the artist to the Artbox Albuquerque permanent collection. We are delighted and honored to be able to share this gorgeous work in our exhibition!

Judith Shaw, a New Orleans native and graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, has always been interested in myth, culture, and mysticism. Her work, inspired by the goddess, nature and sacred geometry, combines whimsy and the esoteric - whimsical tree paintings which often look like women dancing are intertwined with esoteric symbols such as those found in sacred geometry.
Shaw lives in Albuquerque where she divides her time between painting, writing, yoga, and hanging out with friends and family. She has also lived in Mexico and Greece and has visited France, Italy, Turkey, China, Guatemala, and Jamaica.
Shaw published her deck of Celtic Goddess Oracle Cards In November, 2017 which is selling well online and receiving excellent reviews from customers. Shaw’s work has been used on several book covers, in calendars, and is available in a variety of print forms. Judith writes and blogs on the Goddess, mythology, and folktales.

“Tree Kin” is on display now at Maple Street Dance Space as part of the Artbox: Tree Being Exhibition. If you are interested in purchasing “Tree Kin” or other work by Judith Shaw, you may co tat her through her website, www.judithshawart.com
