We are grateful to have shared in Norberta Fresquez's remarkable legacy through Mariachi Christmas at Popejoy Hall. Her vision, passion, and dedication will not be forgotten.

In Memoriam: Norberta Fresquez

New Mexico has lost a pioneering producer, visionary cultural leader, devoted mentor, and tireless champion of its music and traditions.

Originally from Deming and later making her home in Albuquerque, Norberta Fresquez dedicated more than four decades to elevating New Mexico artists and creating unforgettable musical experiences that reached audiences throughout the state, across the nation, and beyond.

Her career began in the late 1970s with a local LULAC event, followed by production of the 1981 National LULAC Conference. She later produced national tours for legendary Mexican entertainer Antonio Aguilar, refining the artistic vision and production excellence that would become her hallmark.

For two decades, Norberta produced the Hispanic Heritage Shows at Tingley Coliseum during the New Mexico State Fair, presenting nationally acclaimed performers alongside New Mexico’s finest talent. Her productions celebrated the rich diversity of our culture through mariachi, New Mexico music, folklórico, country, Latin pop, norteño, Tex-Mex, and local artisans.

In 1991, she founded the Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque, transforming a small educational program of just 40 students into one of the nation’s premier mariachi conferences, now welcoming more than 600 participants annually from across the United States and Mexico. She also created the beloved Mariachi Christmas at Popejoy Hall, a cherished holiday tradition for countless New Mexico families.

While recognized as a 2019 Platinum Music Awards Honoree, Norberta’s greatest accomplishment was not measured in awards or sold-out performances. It was reflected in the countless artists, producers, directors, educators, and cultural leaders she mentored. She opened doors, nurtured talent, and inspired others to carry forward New Mexico’s rich musical traditions with excellence, integrity, and pride.

Norberta understood that music is more than entertainment, it is identity, history, faith, family, and community. Her life’s work preserved our cultural heritage while ensuring it would continue to flourish for generations to come.

We extend our deepest condolences to her children, family, friends, colleagues, and the countless people whose lives she touched. Her extraordinary legacy will live on through every artist she inspired, every tradition she strengthened, and every stage made brighter by her vision.

Que en paz descanse, Norberta. Thank you for sharing your gifts with New Mexico. Your music, your vision, and your legacy will live on forever.

The Broadway League Foundation has revealed the 58 participating Regional Awards Programs for the 17th annual Jimmy Awards which will take place at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre.
