🎥 New Mexico's longest-running Spanish-language film festival kicks off this Friday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in NHCC's Bank of America Theatre with "Face Love/Amor en toda la cara", a romantic comedy directed by and starring festival special guest Gerald Fillmore-García.

📽️ Our short film series spotlighting Caribbean voices closes today with «La memoria del gesto»: a selection of nine short films that explore the materiality of film as an extension of the body.

🎞️ In subtle resonance, the films revisit humanity’s ancient fascination with the hands—especially their everyday gestures and movements—which, as curator Laura Alhach writes, can bring us closer to the sacred.

🌙 Though ephemeral, gestures still manage to capture, if only for a moment, the feelings that set them in motion. It is this idea that today’s meditative session—featuring films from Mexico 🇲🇽, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, Colombia, Spain 🇪🇸, and Venezuela 🇻🇪—brings to the screen.

📽️ Nuestra serie de cortometrajes dedicada a las voces del Caribe llega hoy a su fin con «La memoria del gesto»: una selección de nueve cortometrajes que exploran la materialidad del cine como una extensión del cuerpo.

🎞️ En una sutil resonancia, las películas retoman la antigua fascinación de la humanidad por las manos —especialmente por sus gestos y movimientos cotidianos— que, como escribe la curadora Laura Alhach, pueden acercarnos a lo sagrado.

🌙 Aunque efímeros, los gestos consiguen capturar, aunque solo sea por un instante, los sentimientos que los ponen en movimiento. Es esta idea la que la sesión contemplativa de hoy —con películas de México 🇲🇽, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, Colombia, España 🇪🇸 y Venezuela 🇻🇪— lleva a la pantalla.

📽 Cine Magnífico, New Mexico's premier Spanish-language film festival hosted by Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque, kicks off next Friday, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m., with a screening of the new romantic comedy, "Amor en toda la cara / Face Love", directed by and starring festival special guest Gerald Fillmore-García, who will take the stage for a post-flick Q&A.

💓 Shot in Spanish and English, the film tells the story of Danny, a Spanish screenwriter, and Ana, a Mexican-American actress, as they navigate Los Angeles, bumble their way through cultural minefields, and yet somehow keep their love kindled, all despite COVID-era travel restrictions.In Spanish with English subtitles.

📈 Instituto Cervantes de Albuquerque Leads the Way for DELE Exams in the United States

🏆 Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque has recorded the highest number of DELE exam candidates in the United States, coinciding with a period of strong international growth in the demand for official Spanish language certification.

💯 In 2024, 153,722 candidates took the DELE exam worldwide—a 22.8% increase over the previous year. Level A2 was the most popular choice, followed by levels B2 and B1.

📝 The international network now comprises 1,258 DELE exam centers across 121 countries. Additionally, SIELE—a flexible, digital certification of Spanish proficiency—is available at more than 2,305 centers in 103 countries.

⌛At the Instituto Cervantes in Albuquerque, you can prepare for and take the DELE exam, as well as sit for the SIELE exam.

🎬 Our short film series spotlighting Caribbean voices continues this week with "Caminar en la oscuridad/Walking in Darkness", an exploration of the hardships facing displaced people in Latin America.

🇨🇴 In "La Bonga" Afro-Colombian villagers warily return to the settlement that right-wing paramilitaries forced them to abandon 20 years before. Yet as they reroot, lingering memories intrude, and long shadows of violence create a mood of apprehension.

🇭🇳 🇨🇷 In "Oscurana", Honduran/Costa Rican filmmaker Violeta Mora captures Central American migrants as they risk perilous, clandestine journeys to flee crushing poverty and gang violence at home.

📽 Like last week's "Solastalgia", also directed by Mora, the two films are largely shot in darkness, as traveling at night is safer than in daytime. Yet the approach also lends a moody eeriness, capturing the clandestine and watchful concern of the documentaries' subjects.

🎬 Nuestro ciclo de cortometrajes dedicado a destacar las voces del Caribe continúa esta semana con «Caminar en la oscuridad / Walking in Darkness», una exploración de las dificultades a las que se enfrentan las personas desplazadas en América Latina.

🇨🇴 En «La Bonga», los habitantes afrocolombianos de una comunidad regresan con cautela al poblado que grupos paramilitares de derecha los obligaron a abandonar veinte años atrás. Sin embargo, a medida que vuelven a echar raíces, irrumpen los recuerdos persistentes del pasado y las largas sombras de la violencia crean una atmósfera de inquietud y recelo.

🇭🇳 🇨🇷 En «Oscurana», la cineasta hondureña-costarricense Violeta Mora retrata a migrantes centroamericanos que emprenden peligrosos viajes clandestinos para huir de la pobreza extrema y la violencia de las pandillas en sus países de origen.

📽 Al igual que «Solastalgia», proyectada la semana pasada y también dirigida por Mora, ambas películas están rodadas en gran medida en la oscuridad, ya que viajar al amparo de la noche suele considerarse más seguro que hacerlo durante el día. Al mismo tiempo, este recurso confiere a las imágenes una atmósfera inquietante y sombría que refleja el carácter clandestino de los desplazamientos y el constante estado de alerta de los protagonistas de estos documentales.

🎬 Our short film series on the Caribbean and Caribbean identity continues this Thursday, Aug. 13, with the screening of "Nunca nos vamos del todo/We Never Really Leave", a nostalgic, oft-haunting study of memory: what gets remembered, what gets forgotten, and how recollections are buried, fade, and are reinterpreted as subjects change and grow.

📸Making use of evocative still photographs, home movies, and the sepia-toned pages of family albums, the six shorts venture into domestic and exterior spaces, creating a collage of Caribbean life from the 1960s to the present.

🎬 Nuestro ciclo de cortometrajes sobre el Caribe y la identidad caribeña continúa este jueves, 13 de agosto, con la proyección de «Nunca nos vamos del todo/We Never Really Live», una interpretación nostálgica y, en ocasiones, inquietante de la memoria: qué se recuerda, qué se olvida y cómo los recuerdos quedan enterrados, se desvanecen y se reinterpretan a medida que las personas cambian y crecen.

📸 A través de evocadoras fotografías, películas caseras y álbumes familiares en tonos sepia, los seis cortometrajes, procedentes de Cuba, Estados Unidos, República Dominicana, Puerto Rico, España y Honduras, exploran cómo los recuerdos de la infancia —desde la década de 1960 hasta la de 2020— determinan la manera en que las personas recuerdan no solo la vida familiar, sino también los espacios físicos que resultaron tan importantes para su posterior maduración y desarrollo como adultos.
