Warmest congratulations to our five UNMAM Collections Apprentices and Assistants who are graduating from UNM today!

Congratulations to Hannah and Rebecca on earning your master's degrees, and to Blaise, Cruz and Misti on earning your bachelor's degrees!

We are so grateful for all you've contributed to UNMAM. You've made a true difference here, and it's been a pleasure to work alongside you!

Thank you for the care, energy, leadership and dedication you've shared. We're proud to celebrate this milestone with you and can't wait to see where your next chapters lead! Congratulations again!!

Congratulations to our graduating Museum Assistants and Collections Apprentices! 🐺 We're so proud of them and wish them the best!

Hannah Cerne is the first UNM student to earn dual MA degrees in art history and museum studies. She participated in the Museum Studies GLAM Club and the UNMAM Student Advisory Council and held positions at UNMAM, Tamarind Institute and the Daily Lobo. She collaborated on projects with the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, the Museum of Modern Art and the Getty Paper Project, with research published in the UNMAM Journal. At UNMAM, she served as a Museum Assistant, Study Room Assistant and Curatorial Assistant, and co-curated the upcoming exhibition "Tamarind Goes Global" as her museum studies thesis.

Cruz Davis-Martinez graduates with a dual degree in psychology and studio art and has been accepted into the UNM graduate counseling program. One of his proudest accomplishments is having artwork featured in “Cacophony,” an exhibition of works from John Abbott’s advanced painting and drawing class. They also participated in UNM’s Rural Student Project (RSP), completing more than 40 hours of local community service work.

Collections Apprentice Blaise Padilla was named to the Dean's list every semester of her undergraduate studies. She was accepted into the UNM museum studies graduate program and received the Hibben Fellowship. In 2025, her work appeared in a group ceramics exhibition featuring wheel-thrown and pueblo pottery. She was also featured in “Collective Material,” a senior capstone exhibition.

Art history MA student Rebecca Shalliker completed her thesis, “Symbolists Beyond the Magic: Appropriation in the Art of Elihu Vedder and Gustave Moreau.” She helped organize and secure funding for students to attend College Art Association conferences in New York and Chicago in 2024 and 2025. As a Collections Apprentice during the 2025-26 academic year, she played an integral role in supporting "Collections Year" activities.

We are incredibly honored to have received a $650,000 one-time grant from the Frederick Hammersley Fund for the Arts at the Albuquerque Community Foundation.

The gift will support acquisitions and conservation initiatives while honoring the legacy of Frederick Hammersley (1919-2009), an influential American abstract painter who taught at UNM and made Albuquerque his home.

The grant is designated for the acquisition of visual art that reflects Hammersley’s dedication to experimentation, the exploratory nature of artmaking, mastery of artistic skills and the practice of artmaking as a source of personal growth and community engagement.

Funds will focus on works created after 1945 by artists who have a connection to New Mexico, demonstrate sustained engagement with the broader art world, and are recognized for innovative contributions to modern and contemporary art.

The grant will also support artists via purchases and will expand public access through exhibitions, digital resources and interpretation. Additionally, funds may be used to conserve existing artworks in UNMAM’s permanent collection.

Advisors to the Hammersley Fund for the Arts created the large gift to recognize UNMAM’s innovative approach to involving students in its daily operations.

"As the staff utilized students as part of the decision-making process, non-art students from across the campus found the museum’s programming relevant to their studies. Attendance skyrocketed. Kudos to staff, students and faculty for working together as a team,” said Joseph Traugott, a fund advisor.

Kathleen Shields, also a fund advisor, noted that advisors were impressed with how UNMAM involves students in the selection process for acquisitions, a form of teaching that Hammersley valued.

"The fund advisors are here in New Mexico and have extensive experience in the art and museum communities in the state. They’re paying attention to what we’re doing. That means a great deal," said UNMAM Director Arif Khan.

Computer-based art bridges technology and creativity. It's a genre of art that existed long before ChatGPT, but where and when did it begin?

Using artworks from the University of New Mexico Art Museum, we'll explore the origins of computer art, inspect contemporary digital works and debug how museums accession computer-based and digital art.

Boot up your curiosity and learn about the origins, techniques and applications of computer-based art. Its origins may be closer to UNM than you might think.

Happy Student Employee Appreciation Week! 🐺

Our Assistants and Apprentices are at the heart of everything we do. They're central to our "Collections Year" initiative, whether handling art, completing condition reports or helping build our database. They're active presences in the Beaumont Newhall Study Room, and they help bring exhibitions, archives, marketing and visitor services to life.

Each day, they show up with professionalism, enthusiasm and excellence. We couldn't do it without them and are deeply grateful for all they do.
