Today is National Senior Citizens Day, and it is a good moment to highlight a benefit many New Mexicans may not know about: residents 60 and older always receive free admission to the New Mexico Museum of Art every Wednesday. A huge thank you to Celeste Drewien, who always brings something new and exciting to our classroom through her watercolor workshops! 🎨💧
Every class has a different theme, and this past Saturday, students were guided through watercolor techniques while creating beautiful urban scenes.
What makes this class even more special is that students paint on Strathmore watercolor cards, creating pieces that can be framed, gifted, or sent as a postcard to friends and loved ones. 💌
Thank you to every student who joined us! We love seeing our returning faces and are just as excited to welcome new students into the studio each time.
Celeste will be back in October, and we can’t wait! Stay tuned for the next watercolor theme. 🖌️✨

WHAT TO EXPECT
We’ll begin with a demonstration, followed by hands-on instruction. Paul will work individually with each participant as you begin restoring your chair and guide you through the process.
Because most beginners reach their caning limit after about 3–4 hours (your hands—and your patience—will thank you!), the workshop is divided into two sessions so you can learn at a comfortable pace.
BEFORE CLASS
Paul will need to meet both you and your chair ahead of the workshop to determine the correct size and type of cane needed for your project.
Whether you’re restoring a treasured family heirloom, curious about the craft, or simply ready to learn something new, this is a unique opportunity to learn a beautiful, hands-on traditional craft.

The Art in Public Places Program of New Mexico Arts is seeking an artist or artist team to create a site-specific, functional sundial for the new Spaceport Technology and Reception Center in southern New Mexico.

With a $300,000 commission, this is an extraordinary opportunity to create work that connects art, science, time, technology, the cosmos, and New Mexico’s high-desert landscape. The finished artwork will be permanently installed outdoors and accessible to visitors.

✨ The opportunity:
• $300,000 total project budget
• Open to artists and artist teams residing anywhere in the U.S.
• All media are welcome, provided they can withstand permanent outdoor installation in southern New Mexico
• Up to five finalists will receive a $4,000 honorarium to develop a proposal, plus travel support for the required site visit.

Important: At this time, they are looking for Qualifications, not a finished proposal. Submit examples of previously completed work that demonstrate your artistic style, technique, and ability to undertake a project of this scope.

📅 Application deadline: September 4, 2026, at midnight MDT

This could be a career-defining opportunity to create art that literally helps people look at time, space, and the universe in a new way.
