Desert Rhythms

I love the energy, patterns, and colors of the desert landscapes in New Mexico and the Southwest in general. Acrylic on canvas, 20 x 20 inches.

"My inspiration comes from travel in Asia, East Africa, Russia, Antarctica, and extensive travel throughout North America and Europe. I'm drawn to a few subjects in nature that I find perpetually intriguing, and my voice is whispering a tribute to the incredible beauty of nature, only touched by the hand of humans on rare occasions. Obsessively drawn to trees, rocks, all forms of water, and animals, I portray these subjects as if they were asking me to reveal their messages to the world. Although my first passion as an artist was photography, I spent over 20 years creating my visions in mixed media fiber art before deciding to concentrate my creative energy on painting and photography. My paintings, photographs, and fiber art are dramatic portraits of Earth, and I hope to draw the viewers into these scenes to share the exhilaration I feel and to cherish the wonders of the place we call home."

Presbyterian Church, Taiban, NM

Recently I had numerous occasions to drive between Houston, TX and Albuquerque. Much of that trip is devoid of interest, but this fragile structure, which sits just north of US 40 in Taiban, NM, caught my eye each time. A couple of times I pulled off the road to take photos before continuing either eastbound to Clovis and beyond, or westward into Fort Sumner and beyond. Eventually, my interest grew to do a bit of research to learn that this church - original cost about $250 - was built by the Presbyterians in 1908 as part of a local building boom in Taiban, a boom that included a hotel, bank, school, and various residences. Local fortunes disappeared due to the Great Depression and a local drought, and the final service was held in the church in 1938.

I am not the first to paint this church. In fact, graffiti artists have been adding their artistic touches for years.

In my case, I looked at my reference photos, which recorded a cloudless blue sky, and decided that a bit of drama in the sky and stronger differentiation of cool shadows and warm sunlight might make for a better layout. So I imported an Albuquerque sky and made the other adjustments for the final composition.

My late wife and I spent several days in New Orleans during the Christmas holidays several years ago. I photographed this view as we were arriving at Jackson Square, which fronts historic St. Louis Cathedral. The day I took the photo, though, was extremely overcast with flat light and no shadows. The picture was filed away. I recently rediscovered the image and decided it was time to reinvent that day to interject the saturated color and spirited vibe appropriate for this exciting city. The result is this 11" x14" acrylic painting on a 2" deep cribbed wood panel.
