Master Artist Spotlight: Nicolas Otero 🎨

For more than three decades, Nicolas Otero has dedicated his life to preserving and carrying forward New Mexico’s rich tradition of santo making.
Beginning his apprenticeship at just 16 years old, Nicolas learned the time-honored practices of carving, painting, and creating devotional works passed down through generations of Santeros. Today, his handcrafted retablos, bultos, altar screens, and hide paintings continue to reflect a deep connection to New Mexico’s history, faith, and artistic heritage.

His work can be found in collections including the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Latino, Denver Art Museum, Albuquerque Museum, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the White House Archives.

🏆 In 2026, Nicolas was honored with the Masters Award for Lifetime Achievement, recognizing his lasting contributions to the preservation of New Mexico’s traditional arts.

As a master artist, educator, and conservator, Nicolas continues to keep these traditions alive while inspiring future generations.

Winter Spanish Market returns to Santa Fe this December! ❄️

Join us December 5 & 6, 2026, at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center for a weekend celebrating the artists, traditions, and generations of cultural heritage that make Traditional Spanish Market so special.

This year’s official Winter Spanish Market poster features “San Judas” by Analisa Encinias, beautifully photographed by Bohemian Photography and designed by Sofya Yampolsky.
