“Claim your place in the sun and go forward into the light. The tools are there; the path is known; you simply have to turn your back on a culture that has gone sterile and dead, and get with the program of a living world and a re-empowerment of the imagination.”
Terence McKenna

Arches are a ‘sacred gateway’. They compliment the sky and allow one to see what it looks like, energetically, to enter into another space. They are seen often in places of worship- directing one’s gaze starward. Its intricacy frees the mind rather than trapping it like what a boxed doorway does. They mirror the transcendence of a soul- the patterns and structures which make up the energy of existence. They are infinite and hold meaning. In this painting one can feel that they are entering into a sacred place. This place being nature, specifically inspired by parts of the Himalayan mountains. There is a candle as you enter, for you to light and say some words for a loved one who has already passed through and left their physical bodies here. The bird is a chukar partridge, Pakistans national bird, dressed in traditional shalwar kameez and pakol. This bird is known for its strength and resilience, representing an unyielding love and trust in the divine.
A window looking out from a world where one may feel trapped by modern technology… separated from nature and fated into a spiritual longing.

Process: I stapled window screen to the back of a canvas frame. I started at the center, using acrylic paint to illustrate a tulip growing in its beginning stages; reflecting the beauty of the flower before it has bloomed. This flower is among my Yiayias favorites. Then I moved to the cactus. Prickly pear are abundant in this high desert, the fruit edible and medicinal.
The snake is painted on with clay, then details were layered on top with both oil and acrylic paints. Beads for eyes. The mountains are a mixture of clay and mud, then painted over with acrylic. At the bottom there are little treasures; snake skins, wood, broken pieces of glass and old bottle caps from Mora, and pretty silver beads. At the bottom two corners are coasters made by which had been lost in a move. These two had broken by the time I had found them, so now they are held together and preserved on this canvas.
Water and sky blend together; space is cyclical represented by spirals and the flow of lines.
Painting on screen was challenging. The small holes required extra diligence to layer on paint. This was a study, so I let every aspect of the painting be an experiment. The elements reflect what was on my mind, holding their own significance. The snake showed up in my dreams for a while, I considered adopting one, and I realized its power relating to change and shedding skin; letting go of things even if it’s hard to.
