"Your Brain at 80 — Here's How to Keep It Sharp"

Cognitive decline is not inevitable. It is heavily influenced by lifestyle. The six most protective factors for brain health at 80 — backed by the FINGER Study and AARP research — are regular aerobic movement, social engagement, quality sleep, a Mediterranean-style diet, continuous learning, and managed stress. You have spent August building habits in every one of these categories. Keep going.

The Brain and Memory Training program and Brain Gym are here to support you the rest of the year. Links in bio.

One month of longevity science. One month of consistent micro-habits. If you implemented even two of the practices we shared this August — a daily walk, a phone call with a friend, adding legumes to your meals — you have already changed your biology in measurable ways. Final episode tomorrow.

Weekend Blue Zone practice: eat your largest meal at midday, not in the evening. This aligns with your circadian rhythm and is associated with better weight management, improved insulin sensitivity, and better sleep quality. Most Blue Zone populations eat their main meal midday. Try it today.

"Why Wine with Friends Is a Longevity Practice"

Sardinian centenarians drink one to two small glasses of Cannonau wine per day — always with food, always with family or friends. Cannonau wine has two to three times the flavonoids of other red wines. But researchers are careful to note: the social ritual matters as much as the wine itself. It is not alcohol as a longevity tool — it is the combination of moderate intake, nutrient-dense food, and consistent human connection. The community is the medicine.

Walking as a longevity practice means walking consistently, not perfectly. A 20-minute walk after dinner has been shown to lower post-meal blood sugar by up to 30%, improve sleep quality, reduce cortisol, and give you 20 minutes away from screens. That is four longevity wins in one habit.

"Walk This Way — The Step Count That Actually Matters"

Forget 10,000 steps — that number came from a 1960s Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer, not from research. The actual science: a 2021 JAMA study found that 7,000 to 8,000 steps per day is associated with a 50-70% reduction in all-cause mortality in middle-aged adults. That is about 45-60 minutes of walking spread across the day. Blue Zone populations hit this naturally through daily life. You can build it in too.
