We have really embraced the music and cultures of the world over the last 10 to 12 years. Being the production company that runs. Music Haven Concert Series where sometimes we have literally put microphones on instruments of which they are the only one of their kind in the entire world, where we’ve learned different customs and the different significance of music for different cultures. Yesterday was a day where we were doing two such events at the same time. While Zechariah Allen was mixing at one such event, I (Stan) was mixing another very interesting event. This was so intriguing and really pretty mesmerizing. It’s also amazing how when working with musicians who have been playing their instrument for 40, 50 or even 60 years, where there’s something that can seem so simple like a wooden flute can actually have it’s challenges in that the musician playing that flute hears things that a lay person may not hear. They will ask to have those characteristics brought out in the instrument via equalization and other means. It’s so interesting because we learn every single time that even what can seem like the simplest instrument has new way that as your ear can experience it, you can learn to hear these subtleties. The musicians performing in this particular event all had very specific requests and I literally learned something from each one of them about their instrument and how they want it to sound. Music is so interesting, Sound is so interesting, in some ways it’s so simple, in other ways it’s so complex. To me this is one of the greatest rewards of being a live Sound Engineer.
