🎭 Diaspora Dramatics is back! 🎭

Calling all young storytellers, performers, and creative minds! Join Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY for Diaspora Dramatics: Connecting Youth to a Global Black Heritage, a FREE 6-week workshop where youth will explore storytelling, improv, theatre games, and scenes from African American literature in a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment.

“Wedding Band” offers many thought-provoking moments. We are taught that if one doesn’t learn from the past, one is doomed to repeat it. A play written in the 1960s set in 1918 still has relevance in today's world. The terminology may have changed and the prejudices might be altered, but one wonders if people will ever learn.”

AUDITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

Announcing Auditions for The Black Theatre Troupe of Upstate NY’s first production of the 2026-2027 Season.

MY CHILDREN! MY AFRICA! by Athol Fugard, directed by Jean-Remy Monnay.

MY CHILDREN! MY AFRICA! by Athol Fugard - A gripping drama set during apartheid-era South Africa, where education and political revolution collide.

The great South African playwright confronts the tragedy of apartheid in his native land in this compelling tale about the efforts of a humble and humane Black teacher in a segregated township to persuade just one young person that education, not violence, is the answer to South Africa’s problems.

Auditions: Wednesday June 17 and Thursday June 18 at 7:00PM @ the First Congregational Church, 405 Quail St, Albany, NY 12208.

If you are able, please bring a prepared dramatic monologue. You may also be asked to read from the script.

Performances: October 22-25, 2026 & October 29th – November 1st @ theREP, 251 N. Pearl St., Albany, NY 12207.

We are also looking to cast understudies for all three roles.

Rehearsals will begin early August. There will be weekday evenings and weekend daytime rehearsals. Please bring your calendars/conflicts to auditions.

After weeks of rehearsals, we’re thrilled to finally welcome audiences to Wedding Band by Alice Childress.

These photos are a sneak peek from dress rehearsal, but tonight the story comes to life in front of a live audience.

Set in 1918 South Carolina, Wedding Band is a powerful and moving exploration of love, race, and resilience that remains just as relevant today.
