FROM DREAMS TO CLASS TO STAGE

The greatest strength of Capital Region theater is the extraordinarily large level of interest from the hundreds, if not thousands of people to get on stage.

For the first time since our first show The Christians by Lucas Hnath in December of 2021, the entire cast of Harbinger’s The Counter by Meghan Kennedy is comprised of current and former Acting Class students.

George Filieau has done over 80 shows since retiring from DMV and has lived out his dreams in King Lear, Inherit the Wind and All My Sons.

Lisa DiMaggio Bryk worked numerous times backstage at Sand Lake Center for the Arts/Circle Theatre Players including in ACWPW’s production of Men on Boats before venturing into class. Now, she’s earning her 5 Timer jacket with Harbinger after appearing in Exit Strategy, The Agony and The Agony, The Squirrels & Swing State!

Joyce Reynolds is fulfilling a dream by acting on stage and this is her fourth production in 2 years including Harbinger’s Berkie Award winning production of Deep Blue Sound last September.

Many students have appeared in Harbinger shows, most of the over 130 actors who have collaborated with Harbinger haven’t taken Patrick’s class.

If you’ve dreamt of acting in the greatest new plays, come see The Counter and you may see yourself on stage!

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

Question: What’s your favorite scene or monologue (either that you have performed or watched fellow students perform) from Acting Class and what did you love about it?
Answer: So many to choose from! I really liked a scene from Scandaltown by Mike Bartlett. Each week I couldn’t wait to see my classmates’ development of their characters Lady Susan Climber and Hannah Tweetwell. It was so fun to watch Tweetwell lay out her takedown plot of Lady Climber who remained too self absorbed to see. Very fun scene.

Joyce Reynolds was lucky enough to work backstage and volunteer for Michael McDermott’s production of Brendan Mack’s The Web at Sand Lake Center for the Arts/Circle Theatre Players in 2024 where she heard about acting class. Since then, she’s worked on great scenes from Backstairs Billy by with Chris Foster and Happy Talk by Jessie Eisenberg with Lisa DiMaggio Bryk and gone on to snag leading roles in Sizzle and Steak’s Love Letters and Harbinger’s Berkie Award winning Deep Blue Sound.

She is currently appearing in the pivotal role of Peg in Harbinger’s Capital Region premiere of The Counter by Meghan Kennedy running 9/17-9/26 at Albany Barn.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

“Growing up, I always wanted to act. The closest I had ever been on stage was painting sets for local college productions. When I found a flyer for Acting Class with Patrick White, I couldn't believe it when he told me no experience was required to join. I was so nervous to do something I had always hoped for my whole life and was welcomed immediately. Within my first round of classes, he helped me in understanding meaningful character choices in a scene while working with a partner. He also helped me to lift the words from a monologue I loved. Patrick is an excellent mentor and because of his teaching, I've gained confidence on stage (and off!). He has worked with me for many years on creating full character lives and has inspired me to support our Capital Region theater community. I live the life my theater-loving-childhood self could only dream of!"-Maghen Ryan

"He's such a pleasure to work with. I love him because I know if I give him a show to direct at my place he just makes my load lighter as a producer. I know a show is in good hands when Patrick's directing. He's also an advocate for the theater. If he's not directing or in one of our shows, he still comes to every show."-Carol Max, Curtain Call Theatre https://dailygazette.com/article/2020/02/09/50-plus-living-patrick-white-keeps-on-acting-directing-and-watching

"Patrick has a knack for seeing young talent and nurturing it-Maghen Ryan's performance in ‘Men on Boats’ is a great example of recognized talent and shaping it."-Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill, Capital Repertory Theatre
