We are so lucky to have a talented and generous family business like Parsons' Land Clearing & Excavating Services LLC in our community! The work of yesterday and today was a true family affair with husband and wife Tom and Angela Parsons and their two sons, Clayton and Wyatt Parsons, prepping the site for the new playground. They hauled out the big heavy posts and concrete as well as 20+ years of mulch. Also a big shout out to Alexander and Lee township workers for coming in the afternoon to drive the mulch away. We thank all of you for your volunteerism. We are blessed to have you in our Alexander Local Schools family. Thank you!

This excavation, as well as the past two, we’ve saved thousands of dollars in labor costs by finding volunteers to dismantle the old playground in exchange for them keeping it. This year, Rising Appalachia, a local farm and camp in Athens County, sent their staff to remove the equipment and will be repurposing what they can on their property. Because the equipment is 20+ years old, it no longer meets the strict legal requirements to sell and/or reinstall on public property, such as schools, parks and community centers. Also, some of it gets damaged during the removal. So private community members, churches and organizations have taken the equipment in exchange for their help. We thank them all!

With the last day of school came the last day of memories on this preschool and kindergarten playground. The excavators are en route! But don’t worry — even better memories will be made once the renovation is done this summer and every child can access the play space.

One way we learned what teachers like and don’t like on playgrounds was by passing around the playground catalogue and asking them to write notes. Getting input from the people who are there day by day, supervising our children, is so essential when building a facility for them.

Ever since we started this project, we’ve heard feedback that our children with disabilities at Alexander Local Schools feel more heard and seen. Today one of those students who uses a wheelchair was drawn by his classmate out at recess. Love the wheels!

We were grateful for the opportunity to speak to the school board of Alexander Local Schools and thank both them and the community for supporting our project. It takes a village!

We are very grateful to ServeOhio for giving us another $1,000 this year to support our volunteer team doing the site prep for the playground. These funds will go toward the rental of specialized equipment, supplies, and food for volunteers. Thank you!
