Albany Barn

Albany Barn In 2003, stakeholders in the imperiled City of Albany neighborhood of Arbor Hill developed a revitalization strategy called the "Arbor Hill Neighborhood Plan."
(1)

Albany Barn is dedicated to providing a sustainable creative arts incubator and community arts center in Arbor Hill – a place for artists to live, work and inspire. It was heralded as a breakthrough in collaborative community planning and continues to enjoy broad support during its implementation. As part of that Plan, it was recommended that one of the top priorities be the adaptive reuse of the

abandoned St. Joseph's Academy building, located in the heart of the neighborhood at the corner of North Swan and Second Streets. Albany Barn has partnered with the City of Albany and Albany Housing Authority to redevelop the 40,000 square foot St. Joseph’s Academy building into low-cost live-work apartments, work and rehearsal suites, a dance studio, a digital media lab and ample exhibition, performance and programming space. The project is formally called "Academy Lofts," although it is better known locally as "The Barn." This name originates from the age-old practice of barn raising, when a community collaborated to build a barn - a structure vital to a family's livelihood - for one of its households. The Barn/Academy Lofts will provide essential, affordable facilities to regional artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers, dancers and performers seeking an engaging, supportive environment in which to create and share their work, and broad arts-based programming to benefit residents of all ages. To that end, a key requirement of residency in The Barn/Academy Lofts will be community service including, but not limited to, mentoring, creative art instruction/activities, and neighborhood art installations/public space stewardship. Informed by the success of transformative art incubators in other American cities like Providence, RI and New York, NY, The Barn/Academy Lofts is the kind of dynamic reuse that will at once address all the Arbor Hill Neighborhood Plan's components: Housing, Arts and Culture, Economic Development and Quality of Life. It will anchor the North Swan Street corridor with a built-in creative economy; expand the footprint of arts in Albany, NY; nurture meaningful, productive relationships between artists, arts groups, local businesses and neighborhood residents, particularly at-risk City youth; catalyze responsible revitalization and preserve neighborhood identity; and foster community involvement, unity and pride. Opening in 2013, Academy Lofts @ The Barn currently houses 22 artists in affordable, high-quality, live/work apartments, and more than 20 additional artists work in studios and offices at The Barn. Albany Barn also operates a 1,700 square foot art space one block from the The Barn/Academy Lofts called Stage 1. Stage 1 is available for gallery exhibitions, educational workshops, group meetings and events, community outreach initiatives, and private parties.

Most recently .jackal & helped ABI staff with interviewing the contestants for our Battle of the Brushes fundraiser for MEDLEY. Watch them to find out the strangest interaction have ever had with a bowling ball… 🎳

What Albany Barn, Inc. members/ resident artist do you want Jack to interview next? Tag them in the comments and we will see what happens!

518 Day of Giving comes around each May and reminds us of spring, sunshine, and new beginnings! This year, we’re actually taking a moment to celebrate the past:
We’re celebrating 10 years of Public Art in Albany with “Painting the Night” on Saturday May 16th from 5PM-9PM at Quackenbush Square in Albany. ParkAlbany, in coordination with the City of Albany and with support from the Albany Barn and Albany Center Gallery (AGC), will host “Painting the Night” in Quackenbush Square, celebrating 10 years of game-changing murals in Downtown Albany.
In 2016, ParkAlbany commissioned its first public mural, “Bluebirds” by Michael Conlin. Located on the side of the Quackenbush Parking Garage. “Bluebirds” was the very first CapitalWalls mural and was created with the support of program partners the Albany Center Gallery and The Albany Barn. Upon its completion, it became an instant icon for the City of Albany that continues to welcome residents and visitors as they enter the city.
As part of the event, Albany Barn, Inc. is showcasing:

The Albany Barn will be curating two murals, the first painted by .art & with the second mural painted by .marisa . Additionally, the Barn will curate a new upcycled Street Sign mural by which will be installed just prior to the event.

Unveiling of New Up-Cycled Parking Meters: A yearly project that began in 2023, in coordination with ParkAlbany and the Albany Barn, where local artists bring new life to decommissioned parking meters by transforming them into public art.

Albany Barn Inc’s Artist Alley: Take a stroll through Quackenbush Square and explore a selection of local artists demonstrating and selling their art. Artist announcements coming soon!

Click the link in our bio to read more, and see how your donations can directly impact our city, artists, & community.

Why all this matters:
Artists are creative people, and they bring that creativity into their communities: To an artist, a blank wall is not empty space, but a blank canvas. To another artist, a park filled with people is not simply a gathering place, but an open-air classroom for making and performing art. And to someone else, an empty storefront is not vacancy, but possibility—a studio, a shop, a stage for sharing their work and their gifts. Albany Barn, Inc. is here to help turn those visions into reality and to support artists’ need for connection.
Albany Barn Inc.’s mission is dedicated to developing the infrastructure and culture necessary to sustain a vibrant and equitable creative economy in the communities we serve.
