Akron Symphony Orchestra The Akron Symphony Orchestra began in 1949 when Mabel Lamborn Graham received $500 as “seed money."

https://linktr.ee/akronsymphony The Akron Symphony Orchestra began in 1949 when Mabel Lamborn Graham received $500 as “seed money” from the publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal with the instruction to begin raising money for a professional, union orchestra. After three years of intense fundraising, spearheaded by Mrs. Graham and other dedicated volunteers, the Akron Symphony’s Classic Series was established in the organization’s first season (1952-1953) to provide concerts performed by professional musicians of the highest caliber. Guest conductors and soloists of regional and national stature have been an integral part of the Classic Series since its onset, and remain a high priority for the Symphony.

Akron is blessed with a fantastic symphony orchestra, and one of my favorite things to do is attend its concerts in the stunning Brutalist architecture of E.J. Thomas Hall.

Last spring, I was honored to be asked to join the board of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and it’s been fascinating to get a behind-the-scenes education. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be embraced by the warm and friendly people who run the organization. You have no idea how lucky we are as a community to have such a great team at the helm of orchestra. Our conductors are worth their weight in gold and the players will leave you spellbound!

This Saturday is the first concert of the season, and the orchestra is offering a special discount for Everyday Akron followers & their friends!

Here are the program notes for Saturday’s concert, provided by YOUR Akron Symphony Orchestra:

The season kicks off with a whirlwind blast of emotional energy and dazzling imagery. At the starting line is arguably the most recognizable of all overtures… the William Tell by Rossini. A symphonic suite from Studio Ghibli’s iconic Howl’s Moving Castle follows, along with Dance of the Hours from Disney’s Fantasia (1940).

Headlining our season debut is an autobiographical tour-de-force as romantically beautiful as it is deliciously dark: Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. Leonard Bernstein said it best: “You take a trip and you wind up screaming at your own funeral.”

Next month we're kicking off our 73rd season with one of the most deliciously dark and masterfully magical works ever conceived... Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique! It's the ultimate autobiographical piece following the composer down an incredible love and o***m driven psychosis, eventually facing the ultimate recompense and even joining witches and sorcerers at his own funeral.

We won't spoil the ending but it's no surprise that after finally hearing the piece two years later, the real life muse Henrietta Smithson, would go on to marry Hector Berlioz in Paris.

Do you know a student who loves to perform and might be interested in being part of the Akron Youth Philharmonic? All middle and high school level students interested in joining the ensemble can audition for free!

Auditions will be held at Miller South School for the Visual and Performing Arts from 3:30–7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, and Thursday, September 17. Come show us what you can do and take the next step in your musical journey!
