We had a preview of tonight's event at the library, and it is phenomenal. The Nightlight and Akron Summit County Public Library presents pianist, Chris Jarrett, performing live piano alongside the silent film “Battleship Potemkin.” FREE at the main library tonight from 7-9. Chris will have music available for purchase.

Chris Jarrett has composed a piano score to Sergei Eisenstein’s famous silent movie, “Battleship Potemkin.” The theme of this film — often considered one of the most ingenious productions in all of film history — is the people’s rebellion in the Russian Revolution of 1905. Jarrett’s partially improvised and partially composed score underlines Sergei Eisenstein’s anti-militaristic message.

Jazz, classical, avant-garde and ethnic styles merge stunningly in the music of pianist and composer Chris Jarrett. His music is vital and impulsive, full of breaks and surprises and rarely fits into the usual categories. For Chris Jarrett, Frank Zappa is an equally valuable model as the masters of the Baroque or the Renaissance. His repertoire ranges from atonal miniatures to sonatas, film scores, ballet, and opera.

With his performances as Aphrodite Banks, Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Candyman) has a place among London’s celebrated drag artists. One night after a show, he steps out to get some ci******es and is brutally attacked by a man (George MacKay, 1917), out with a gang of his friends. Although Jules is able to recover physically, he withdraws from the outside world, traumatized. Months later, he recognizes his attacker by chance in a gay sauna. Without make-up and wrapped only in a towel, Jules is able to approach the other man incognito and find out who he is.

The Nightlight is a proud Community Partner of the Cleveland International Film Festival — and this year, our Executive Director, Jenn Kidd, is on the jury for the George Gund III Memorial Central and Eastern European Competition, presented by The George Gund Foundation.

“It is an honor to be selected as a juror for a category I care about so dearly and to represent Akron’s only nonprofit arthouse cinema.” from Jenn Kidd, Executive Director of The Nightlight

CIFF 14 launched a special focus on films from Central and Eastern Europe, the native lands of many Clevelanders.

This year, CIFF is proud to present its 22nd Central and Eastern European Competition. And, for the twelfth year, they are deeply honored to showcase this competition in loving memory of George Gund III with the support of an endowment from The George Gund Foundation.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s acclaimed intimate epic ABOUT DRY GRASSES - a CRITIC’S PICK - is showing at The Nightlight beginning this Saturday, 3/30. Tickets are available at nightlightcinema.com

“A masterpiece. A searing, mesmerizing, and unforgettable wintry mood piece.” – The Wrap

Nestled away in wintry East Anatolia, public-school art teacher Samet yearns to leave the sleepy village for cosmopolitan Istanbul. Further disenchanted when he and Kenan, a colleague, come under public scrutiny, Samet fears circumstances will keep him in Anatolia and his dreams of a new life permanently out of reach.

A silver lining is a budding relationship with Nuray, a fellow teacher and firebrand who develops connections with both Samet and Kenan, forcing Samet to confront what he can't readily accept.

Renowned for his nuanced, visually ravishing imagery, award-winning director Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, Winter Sleep) capstones the film with one of his greatest sequences, a dazzling climax featuring an entrancing performance from Dizdar, who took home Best Actress at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

“Critic’s Pick! “A magnificent culinary romance.”’
- The New York Times

Trân Anh Hùng ,2023, French with English subtitles 135 minutes

Destined to be remembered as one of the great films about the meaning, texture, and experience of food, this sumptuous, exceptionally well-crafted work, set in late 19th-century France, stars Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel (married, decades ago, in real life) as Eugénie, a cook, and Dodin, the gourmet chef she has been working with for 20 years. As they reach middle age, they can no longer deny their mutual romantic feelings, which have so long been concentrated in their passionate professionalism.

Follow the extraordinary journey of chefs from Michelin-starred restaurant KOKS as they embark on a mission to create an exclusive dining experience in the picturesque and isolated village of Ilimanaq, Greenland.

The prestigious chefs behind the Michelin-star restaurant KOKS in the Faroe Islands begin the mind-boggling challenge of opening an exclusive eatery in one of the world’s most remote corners - the village of Ilimanaq in Greenland. This picturesque little settlement of just 50-some people is one of the oldest in Greenland, and the only way to get there is by boat through the Ilulissat Icefjord.

Silas Hite is an Emmy-winning composer with music in his DNA. He began his career co-scoring TV shows and films such as Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs with his uncles, noted composers Mark & Bob Mothersbaugh of the band Devo.

His music plays in television shows around the world, from kids shows like Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue! and Disney’s Dance-A-Lot Robot, to adult shows such as The Big Brunch (HBO Max), Abused by the Police (BBC), and Chef’s Table (Netflix). He has scored hundreds of commercials for clients such as Apple, McDonalds, and Chevy, earning him an Emmy, Adweek’s Campaign of the Decade, and most recently a Titanium Grand Prix from Cannes. He’s contributed memorable music to some of the most beloved video games of the past twenty years such as The Sims 2, Skate 3, Tetris mobile, and The Simpsons.

His music has played in such venerable institutions as the New York Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, The Whitney Museum, and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
