How about a fun little TBT story to end the day?

It was mid-October, 1931. Police were summoned to break up a fight at The Montreal Club (you may recall, a predecessor to Jilly's). It seems a patron was riled when he didn't get what he thought he paid for. But, it had nothing to do with beer.

Some personal troubles led AD Whitehead to seek the counsel of Negreim Gargalansky, a Congolese Witch Doctor who lived above the bar and was known for curing woes from love to finance, and everything in-between. Gargalansky sold Whitehead a magic root for 25cents and told him to close his eyes, run the root between his fingers, and that when he opened his eyes, "he'd see what he wanted to see." Whitehead went on his way and did what he was instructed. But when he opened his eyes, nothing had changed. He came back to the club and complained to the Witch Doctor that his magic hadn't worked. They argued. The argument became a fight. Blows were thrown and the police were called. Both men were arrested and taken to jail.

A few days later, they stood in Akron Municipal Court in front of Judge CVD Emmons who launched into an investigation of the Witch Doctor's merits. Gargalansky told the judge that he had come to America from the Congo at the age of 12, and shared photos of himself in native costume. The judge asked him to say, "good morning" in Congolese. Gargalansky did that, and also shared the Congo words for good afternoon and good night.

"Now can you say five days in the workhouse?" the judge reportedly asked. The Witch Doctor was stumped. "And that's where my magic comes in," declared Judge Emmons. Whitehead was ordered to pay the costs, but the judge eventually relented and suspended sentences for both men.

Judge CVD Emmons, who presided over Akron's Municipal Court from 1931-42, is the great uncle of Peep's Jennifer Emmons Klingenberg and Jamie Boyd. #FullCircle (note: the attached photo is not of Negreim Gargalansky. It is however, of an African Witch Doctor living the US in the 1930s).
