Greetings! We are contacting you today from the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) to provide some information about a research project that we are working on. The project is titled, “Determining Learning Objectives for Disability-Focused Simulated Patient Encounters through Focus Groups.” Most medical and pharmacy schools do not have a standardized approach to teaching patient-centered care for disabled individuals, including d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The goal of our project is to assess what is lacking and use this to improve the training of medical and pharmacy students to better serve members of the disability community.

In order for us to know how to improve, we need to hear from the Deaf and disability communities and strive to understand their concerns. For this reason, we are requesting your help. We will be conducting focus groups, in-person or online (over Zoom) in which we will be asking participants about their previous experiences with healthcare professionals and what they would like future healthcare professionals to know when interacting with patients with disabilities. If you identify as someone with a disability, we would be extremely interested in hearing about any good or bad experiences that you have had with healthcare workers. Your valuable feedback would help us to better train medical and pharmacy students at NEOMED to meet the needs of patients with disabilities.

We value your time and will compensate focus group participants in the form of a $25 gift card. SignStage is holding open auditions for their upcoming Deaf Theatre Video Production of:

“Dancing Hands Jukebox”

June 22nd & 23rd 6 - 8 pm at the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center, 11635 Euclid Ave., Cleveland OH 44106

“Dancing Hands Jukebox” is a one-hour Deaf Theatre variety show consisting of several short plays/scenes and songs performed in Sign (American Sign Language). Rehearsals take place during the summer months with a video-taping date of September 24th, 2021. Rehearsals will be set up according to the availability of the actors cast in each episode. This is a Deaf Theatre Production with Deaf and Hearing Actors performing together. Knowledge of ASL is NOT required but you may need to learn sign if cast in a role. Voicing roles are also available. The entire production will be video-taped and edited together for public viewing at a later date.

Update. March 23, 2021: For those of you who follow this page. We have a performance planned for sometime after September 2021. We're still working out the technical details but there will be a performance this Fall. With the whole covid debacle, we may not be allowed a live audience. We may need to record, edit and THEN broadcast the performance. THAT might also mean adjusting exactly WHAT we perform. Stay tuned, we're gonna need actors who want to perform in ASL. AND... voicers to voice for our deaf actors. As always, if you've never learned ASL but would like to be part of this amazing experience, that part never changes. You'll be welcome to join our cast. It's the "how" and "when" that will need adjusted to fit our current social environment. We still love you all! Stay tuned! The Morgan

For our Deaf Theatre fans: The next Deaf Theatre play will be produced at Near West Theatre in Cleveland OH in the Fall of 2021. The working title is: "Alice in Wondeafland". For any of our friends who attend Gallaudet.

Hi all,

A friend of mine told me that Gallaudet University was closing down

So I checked it out…no…Gallaudet University will remain open however

When the students go on spring break on March 23 –

It will transfer to “Remote Learning”.

Effective March 23, and continuing to the end of the Spring semester, all courses will be provided online.

Students are asked not to return to campus after spring break.

Students who need to remain on campus for extenuating circumstances will also receive instruction remotely, and must prepare for limited on-campus activities and interactions.

Deans and department chairs will communicate more specific guidance. Faculty have received guidance and recommendations on online delivery methods for their courses.

Gallaudet Technology Services will provide support to faculty, as detailed on its website, including instructional strategies, available tools, and recommended best practices.

So we need to be prepared if students come back to Cleveland

And get lost with the remote learning

Or if our Deaf community rumors gets confused with the live streaming by President Bobbi Cordono.
