Meet the Artist: Gregory Cross

Cleveland artist, musician, educator, and Kent State University graduate Gregory Cross has spent a lifetime using art to tell honest stories about the world around him.

A talented drummer as well as a painter, Cross has dedicated his career to both creating and teaching. He served as an art instructor at Kent State University, where he inspired future generations of artists while continuing to develop his own artistic voice.

Cross’s life has intersected with pivotal moments in American history. He met civil rights leader Malcolm X, lived through the May 4, 1970, tragedy as a student at Kent State, and met civil rights leader Julian Bond—someone he deeply admired. Bond’s influence was so profound that Cross named his son after him.

Through vibrant figurative paintings created in watercolor, acrylic, oil, and even unconventional materials like shoe polish, Cross explores history, family, and contemporary social issues. His work invites viewers to ask questions, reflect, and find connections to their own lives.

His exhibition, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, honors the mentors, historical figures, and shared experiences that have shaped his journey. Inspired in part by renowned sculptor Selma Burke, Cross embraces the belief that every artist stands on the foundation laid by those who came before.

As Cross says, “I don’t make paintings just for the sake of making paintings. I want them to reflect what’s happening in my life, what’s happening in this country, and ultimately what’s happening in the world.”

Join us at East Ave Gallery to experience Standing on the Shoulders of Giants and celebrate the work of an artist whose life, music, teaching, and creative practice continue to inspire meaningful conversation.
