CALL FOR ART! 3 DAYS UNTIL DEADLINE!
Motion // Emotion
Juried Photography Exhibition
Deadline: Monday, March 9, Midnight

Summit Artspace on East Market, Three G Gallery

Show runs April 10 - May 9, 2020

Motion and emotion are two concepts that affect our everyday lives: we are constantly moving and are constantly feeling. Motion is a wide-ranging idea, referring to, perhaps, ways to get from Point A to Point B, the toss of a ball, or the inevitable passing of time. Motion could remind you of a childhood memory spent swinging on the playground, the rotation of the Earth around the Sun, the busyness of the holiday season, or tree branches moving in the wind. Regardless of what it looks like to you, it is undeniable that we live in a universe of unending motion.

While motion is often external, emotion manifests itself internally. Emotion is a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others. Examples range from excitement to sorrow, embarrassment to fear, anger to surprise. Emotions can lead us to make decisions and make change, and allow us to form deep relationships.

For this exhibition, photographers are asked to respond to either of these universal ideas, motion or emotion. You are encouraged to think critically about these concepts and respond in a way that reflects your interpretation. In addition to your photographs, we ask that you please include which concept you are embodying and how in your artist statement.

“I think that emotional content is an image’s most important element, regardless of the photographic technique." -Anne Geddes

The cast bronze "Baby Rattle"...maybe from an archeological dig, an ancient burial site or the mind of James Edwards, a student at The University of Akron. See it today, 12-7, in THREE G Gallery on the 3rd floor in the Boschian: Beautifully Bizarre Juried Art Show at #SummitArtspace on East Market. Free admission. It's just one of many unique works by local artists. Open weekly Thursday and Friday, 12-7 p.m., and Saturday, 12-5 p.m. But this week is Downtown Akron Artwalk on Sat., March 7, 5-9 p.m., so the galleries throughout the building are open 12-9!! Artist Statement
Baby Rattle is essentially the physical manifestation of the child that dwells inside us all. its arms and legs are fully movable, simulating a ragdoll effect. The inside contains tiny metal balls so that when shaken, it makes a rattling sound. in a way, it almost seems to be a child's toy, but has been tarnished and warped with age.

She realized her emotion with this prize winner in the Summit Artspace gallery

Artist Kaliyah Smith was giving the evil eye to some unlucky person in her self-portrait, "Venomous," that earned an honorable mention in the Embracing Heritage Juried Art Exhibition at #SummitArtspace on East Market. She is an Archbishop Hoban High School student. In the Transition Gallery until March 14, 2020, the exhibit celebrates the cultural impact of African American heritage and life experience by local artists for #BlackHistoryMonth. Free admission. Open weekly Friday and Saturday, 12-7 p.m.; and Friday, 12-5 p.m. But this week is Downtown Akron Artwalk on Sat., March 7, 5-9 p.m., so the galleries throughout the building are open 12-9!! Free admission. Artist studios open select hours. Pop-up shops, 5-9 p.m., on March 7. See our exhibit listing at summitartspace.org/event.

Kaliyah's Artist Statement: The eyes can give off a distinct look with every emotion a person feels. They can give off a loving stare, and they can give off a cold, venomous stare. Be cautious around this one!

VERY. LAST. WEEKEND. To see Facing the Façade, Architecture Inspiring Art, at Summit Artspace on Tusc and get lost in this watercolor by Matt Shiarla of #DoylestownOH. Titled "Barn 1 Guernsey County." Gallery and artist studios open weekly Friday, 5-8 p.m; and Saturday, 12-5 p.m. Free admission. See all of our exhibit information at: summitartspace.org/event.

Artist Statement: This artwork is from a series of paintings of old barns that depict the decay of the family farm and nature’s way of reclaiming them. The architecture of barns is an interesting topic in and of its self and how it purpose shaped its façade. Today’s equipment is much too large for the turn of the century barns and therefore many are left to rot. Many of these great barns are falling down and being consumed by nature. I was greatly influenced by a show I saw at the Akron art museum a few years back, Detroit Disassembled by Andrew Moore. I see his work when I see these farms and how this culture is dying due to big commercial farming. In this particular piece I have showed the optimist in me that there is some good that will come out of it. It creates a great habitat for animals and plants to flourish, and places to use recreationally.

Andy's art world is weirdly wonderful and takes third place at Summit Artspace

The way you scan the detail in the works of Hieronymous Bosch is the way you'll walk round and peer at the 3D piece,"False Redemption In The Land Of Flesh And Tin," by Andy Tubbesing that won second place in the Boschian: Beautifully Bizarre Juried Art Show at #SummitArtspace on East Market. So much bizarreness and beauty in the THREE G Gallery on the third floor until March 28. You'll be in awe. Free admission. Open weekly Thursday and Friday, 12-7 p.m., and Saturday, 12-5 p.m. But this week is Downtown Akron Artwalk on Sat., March 7, 5-9 p.m., so the galleries throughout the building are open 12-9!! Free admission. Artist studios open select hours. Pop-ups during #AkronArtwalk. See our exhibit listing at summitartspace.org/event.

Artist Statement: My art tends to be representational – fleeting glances through windows, around corners, or over hills onto otherwise unseen worlds. Onlookers have labeled these worlds somber, ominous, low-brow, cartoony, weird. Who am I to argue? Our ideologies may have changed in the intervening 500 years, but I like to think that Dürer or Bosch would recognize the lost souls in this assemblage. Influences include Bruegel (the elder), Doré, Wyeth (the eldest), Wood (both Grant and Wally). Takeaway thought: Creating art is a perilous enterprise, a trek through uncharted territory on a moonless night. It seems the only thing more difficult is not creating art.

Three generations of women in the Growing Thunder family worked on this outfit.

Grandmother Joyce, daughter Juanita and granddaughter Jessa Rae (Dakhóta/Nakoda) are all highly accomplished and prolific bead and quill artists, and embody the intergenerational continuity of their artistic tradition.

"Give Away Horses," 2006, is in Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian collection and currently on view in our Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery exhibition "Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists."

While women have long been the creative force behind Native American art, their individual contributions have been largely unrecognized, instead treated as anonymous representations of entire cultures. #HeartsOfOurPeoples is the first major thematic show to explore the artistic achievements of Native women, and at its core is a firm belief in the power of the collaborative process.
