“On their own, the paintings depict moments in life that are easy to forget. But together, they tell a larger story,” writes Brittany Moseley of Signal Akron in her article of ’s solo exhibition. “Bad Nostalgia” is currently in Artspace’s Welcome Gallery through March 16.

Of the 30+ works in Strobel’s exhibition, the majority are 5” x 7” watercolor on paper paintings, aside from a few canvas pieces. This body is a creative divergence from her typical large-scale abstract painting, as shown in her recent BFA exhibition. Strobel is a recent graduate of ’s Myers School of Art.

In her new exhibit “Bad Nostalgia,” artist Katie Strobel captures the simple, often forgotten, moments in everyday life.

❄️ “20th Annual FRESH Juried Exhibition”
Juried by Pita Brooks, mixed media artist and Executive Director of Akron Soul Train, the annual FRESH exhibition challenges local artists to push the boundaries of what art can be—stylistically, conceptually, and technically—and challenges the viewer to see the world through a new lens.

❄️ “Bad Nostalgia”
Katherine Strobel focuses on the memory and candidness of a scene or subject. The people pictured are painted from life or candid photographs. Her use of watercolors is indicative of memory through its ephemeral quality and transparent layers.

❄️ “Taking Care of Our House: Communities Coming Together and Making a Difference”
Local students, teachers, and school leaders unite with the organization Art for Resistance Through Change - ART-C in this intergenerational art exhibition to promote meaningful change.

❄️ Waffle Weave Invitational
The Waffle Weave structure has a unique ability to transform a textile. Historically, this structure was used to create highly functional textiles for cleaning or drying, and to help insulate the body with tiny pockets of air. In this exhibition, fiber artists and craftspeople explore the many ways this weave structure can be used. Curated by StephenWeaves textile art and handwoven goods.

❄️ “Nobody Here”
David Kruk is interested in how anachronistic objects employ nostalgia through the remixing of cultural references to engage with consumer capitalism. The continual referencing of the past exemplifies contemporary society’s cultural stagnation and the erosion of collective imagination towards a radically transformative future.

Another happening in the building THIS FRIDAY in organization Artists of Rubber City’s The BOX Gallery is Sharon Wagner’s “Anything, Everything, All at Once”. The solo show featuring ceramics, assemblages, and upcycled denim will be on view January 12 - February 16! 🔲

“Several decades as a potter have allowed the exploration of the multiple firing methods that are represented in this show. I create both functional and decorative pots, from whimsical to sculptural.
The assemblages seemed to evolve naturally with the first piece I created being shown in the “Fresh” show 2013 featuring several clay whistles shaped like heads. These assemblages reflect my appreciation of rust along with old weathered wooden tools and boxes. Each and every one still begins with a clay component.
All up-cycled denim totes, cross-body cell phone bags and aprons are sewn on an industrial machine with nylon thread making them extremely durable. The selection of pillows all have new pillow forms included. I am also open to accepting commissions.”

🎉 Jurors darius.steward and Gwen Waight chose artist among many entries to be the 2024 recipient of Summit Artspace's BIPOC+ Exhibition! 🎉

Through a blind juried process, Sykes was selected to receive a $1,000 stipend to support the creation of a solo exhibition in ’s Horizon Gallery. Look out for Sykes' solo exhibition, “The Aunties”, during the Season, April 5 - June 15.

Sylvia Sykes is a portrait artist from Akron, OH whose skillful hand dances across acrylic, oil, and digital mediums. Her focus often rests on African American subjects, community narratives, and the strength of women, brought to life through both caricature and realism. While a performing arts school nurtured her early passion, Sylvia's academic journey led her to a Bachelor's in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of Akron. These disciplines infuse her work with themes of human connection, societal dynamics, and community bonds. Embracing the therapeutic potency of color, Sylvia bathes her pieces in vibrant hues and bold outlines, creating a symphony for the eyes and the soul. SylviaPaints

The organizational goal behind this exhibition is to actively undo systems of oppression and domination present in the art world. Summit Artspace is interested in the many ways in which BIPOC+ (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) artists impact our communities through their art.
