Meryl Engler is one of the featured artists for the upcoming Faces of Akron project happening right here at Summit Artspace! Meryl is a printmaker who grew up in Huntington Beach, California and moved to Akron in 2019. During her time in Akron she's become very involved in the community, including working with Rubber City Prints, Inc. and Akron Soul Train. In her art, she seeks to push the limits of printmaking and combine different media in new and exciting ways. She mostly creates woodcut prints and does so in a series of layers. Her pieces involve lots of experimentation and tend to revolve around different relationships she's experienced in her life. Congratulations, Meryl! We look forward to seeing what you create for Faces of Akron.

Support this sale presented by Artists of Rubber City in honor of Frances Ryan. See more details below!

Anyone who visited Summit Artspace or Artists of Rubber City/the BOX gallery in the last two decades surely crossed paths with Frances Ryan, who died in February. She was an avid patron of both visual and performing arts. Maybe she greeted you at the door or you chatted with her at opening receptions. Maybe you remember her as the volunteer or fellow audience member who always dressed for the occasion in colorful ensembles. For those who knew her, Fran will be remembered as a good friend whose love for the arts and animals was bountiful.

For more than thirty years Frances lived in a spacious Highland Square apartment with plant filled windows that sparkled with colorful glass. The interior, filled with books and artwork, was a visual delight.

Fran would be delighted to know that the intention of this sale is to find new owners and homes for artwork from her collection while benefiting two arts organizations that she supported.

All proceeds will be donated to Artists of Rubber City and Summit Artspace in Fran’s memory.

Cash and checks are appreciated; credit cards are accepted.

"Mrs. M"
Oil Based Media
$1,500

“Mark Giangaspero’s First Place Awarded “Mrs. M” positively writhes with truth and deliciously specific humanity. For me, portraiture and figurative art go hand in hand…it doesn't need to show a body to be considered figurative and it doesn’t need a face to be considered a portrait. “Mrs. M” is executed masterfully, where we feel the juicy folds and excruciating cracks in the skin, the ruddy wetness around the eyes, and that magnificent nose that comes way out into our space. Even the sweater has personality. “Mrs. M” draws me in to get to know her better, she is alive and holds my interest captive.” Juror: Judy Takács

We're installing our spring exhibitions (opening April 8th) but in the meantime, view Jacob Mollohan's two photography series documenting the Ukrainian refugee crisis virtually: https://www.summitartspace.org/jacob-mollohan-ukrainian-refugee-crisis/

"On March 6, 2022, my father and I departed for Krakow, Poland. Our goal was to help volunteer during the Ukrainian refugee crisis. During our time, I had my camera with me to document what it was I saw, in hopes that I could bring back a strong set of images to activate as much support and empathy as possible for the Ukrainian people," Mollohan said.
