Public Art Rule no. 02 - IT’S NOT FOREVER

From there here-today-gone tomorrow of a “one day sculpture” to the growth of a future library over 100 years, artists are shaking up the life expectancy of public artworks. Places don’t remain still and unchanged, so why should public art?

Demand new rules for public art now! An organisation born in Bristol, UK, Situations reimagines what public art can be and where and when it can take place. We like to think and reflect on what hap...

The New Rules of Public Art

Public Art Rule no.01 - IT DOESN'T HAVE TO LOOK LIKE PUBLIC ART.

The days of bronze heroes and roundabout baubles are numbered. Public art can take any form or mode of encounter – from a floating Arctic island to a boat oven – be prepared to be surprised, delighted, even unnerved.

Matteo Rubbi “Let the Stars Sit Wherever They Will” at Studio Guenzani, Milan / MOUSSE CONTEMPORARY

Matteo Rubbi draws inspiration from the Navajo legend where a coyote addresses the First Man, who is busy arranging stones as stars in the sky. The coyote says to him: “Let the stars sit wherever they will.”

Rubbi's reproduction of mountains in the solar system rendered at a 1:100000 scale speaks to us about cosmology, myth, emblems and ritual.

A likely picture of what the inside of 15 Broad looked like in early 1900!

Our building was originally built in 1913 by American Vitrified Products. The clay beds in Springfield Township and the canals of east Akron gave rise to thriving potteries in what was then called Middlebury.

Skilled potters of the 19th century constructed most ware by hand, using crude "kick" wheels and molding devices.

Various products fell in and out of demand from crocks & stoneware to smoking pipes to clay sewer pipes. In its heyday, Diamond Match Company, would package a complimentary clay pipe with its box of matches!

Akron’s ‘Grizzled Wizard’ to leave for bluer pastures

Thank you to Doug Livingston from ABJ for spending time with us to chronicle the final installation of P.R. Miller's works at Gallery 15 this past Saturday. It was a momentous day!

Broken window blinds, pitted metal fan covers, blackened sprinkler heads and assorted metal refuse twisted and welded into 8-foot-tall flowers poked out the back of the truck, where two men dropped the tailgate and wrestled the pieces apart.

Have an old tube TV? SPACES wants it!!

We're looking for donated cathode ray tube televisions (the old ones before flat panels came out) to be used in an upcoming exhibition. It would be great if they were all the same size/model, but we can definitely live with different TVs. If you have one or you have more that you'd be willing to donate to SPACES, please email, call or PM us.

We can pick up if you live within 10 miles of downtown. Your donation may be tax deductible.
