Throwdown Thursday

One second I had a clear view down the road...A few seconds later, dust kicked up by strong outflow winds was blowing across the highway and visibility quickly dropped.

The dust became thick enough that even my camera eventually struggled to find something to focus on! The supercell behind me was moving into Paducah, Texas. I was getting away from it as it was producing 70 mph winds and golf ball sized hail!

Structure Wednesday

Not every supercell needs a massive mothership look to stand out.

This storm had a clean, sculpted appearance as it moved across the open Texas landscape, with a broad low base and a beautiful contrast between the storm and the fading light. Yet, it was producing 70 mph winds and ping pong ball size hail!

Sometimes the quieter-looking structure ends up being some of the most photogenic.

Tornado Tuesday

A close-range intercept of the Granger, Texas EF2 on March 21, 2022.

I watched as the tornado crossed the highway roughly three-quarters of a mile ahead of me, with debris visible around the circulation. This tornado was later rated EF2 with estimated peak winds of 135 mph and tracked 29.28 miles.

Even years later, watching it cross the road that close is still one of those moments that immediately takes me back.

Mesocyclone Monday

This tornado-warned supercell near Minier, Illinois came close to producing as it moved toward me on April 3, 2026.

The timelapse really shows the storm’s rotation, along with a thick inflow tail feeding back into the updraft. For a while, the storm looked increasingly organized, but it eventually became undercut by its own outflow and never fully got the job done.

At the time, the storm was also warned for hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

Snapshot Sunday

A powerful tornado southwest of Braman, Oklahoma with a satellite tornado visible just off to the side.

This was one of those scenes where the scale is hard to fully appreciate until you look at the entire frame. The main tornado dominates the view, while the smaller circulation beside it makes the whole scene even more striking.

Supercell Saturday

Sometimes storm chasing is less about having perfect data and more about making a decision and committing to it.

I photographed this tornado-warned supercell near the tiny unincorporated community of Dumont, Texas. The storm was warned for hail up to 4 inches in diameter, and I spent roughly 2–3 hours of this chase with essentially no cell service.

This was before I had Starlink, so at one point it really became: pick a Texas road, hope it goes where you need it to go, and trust the storm positioning.

Thankfully, this time it worked.

Flashback Friday

This video is playing in real time.

On June 6, 2025, I watched one of the most electrically active storms I’ve ever seen north of Pampa, Texas. Lightning was flashing almost continuously across the sky, making the storm look like a sped-up timelapse even though this was normal-speed video.

At the time, the supercell was tornado warned and also warned for hail up to 2.5 inches.

It was one of those storms that was almost hard to process in person because the sky just never seemed to stop lighting up.

Throwdown Thursday

β€œThis is it.”

A funnel cloud was forming on this tornado-warned supercell near Lubbock while some seriously large hail fell right in front of us.

Radar indicated hail up to 2.5 inches in diameter, and this was one warning where the radar definitely wasn't exaggerating!

Despite the impressive funnel, it never went on to produce a tornado from what I observed.

Structure Wednesday

This storm had one of the sharpest precipitation cores I’ve seen!

From this angle, the heavy rain had incredibly sharp edges on both sides, giving it an almost wedge-like appearance from a distance β€” but this was precipitation, not a tornado.

As I panned across the storm, the rest of its structure came into view. The severe thunderstorm was warned for 60 mph winds and 1-inch hail, with a tornado possible.

Tornado Tuesday | Part 2

Watch how quickly this tornado grows.

Continuing from yesterday's Mesocyclone Monday, this EF3 tornado rapidly became larger and more organized as it moved through western Iowa. As I filmed, multiple vortices were visible around the circulation while the tornado continued growing right in front of us.

And believe it or not, it still wasn't finished growing.

The Minden/Shelby tornado would eventually become a massive wedge and was rated EF3 with estimated peak winds of 160 mph.
